Today, 55 years ago, we the Dutch were once again confronted with the power of the sea. The colossal disaster happened on February the 1st 1953. It was to be one of the biggest floods in the history of the Netherlands.
A combination of spring tide and a mighty storm made the water surge over the dikes. 1,835 People drowned, 46,000 houses were damaged and 322,500 acres of land flooded.
What factors influenced the flood, where did the flood damage occur, and what was the scope of the flood?

Hummer Scooter

While design of heavy pickup trucks is intended for transporting large objects in construction work, the main appeal of a Hummer is that it looks big and dominant. The Hummer brand is all about strength and capability, but for some reason the smaller and less capable the Hummer, the better it sells.
That's probably why Italian designer Oberdan Bezzi penned the Hummer H2 450 scooter. Although I admire Bezzi's drawing skills, this is just an ugly moped.

The Number 23 Frequency Enigma
The letter W is the 23rd letter of the alphabet. The symbol for that letter is two points down and three points up (23).
The first landing on the Moon was in the Sea of Tranquility, 23.63 degrees East. Second landing was in the Ocean of Storms, 23.42 degrees West. Notice the names of the picked sights and how they contrast. Note: First two landings were Apollo 11 and 12 (11 + 12= 23). Just exactly what does NASA know?
The first song on Side A of the Beatles first album took 23 takes to record.
In one episode of the X-Files, Agent Mulder goes to the apartment of a recently deceased man and we see the number 23 on the door as he is let in.
More of this nonsense at The Number 23 Frequency Enigma.

Casino Carpet Galley

Casino carpets are usually an exercise in deliberate bad taste that somehow encourages people to gamble. In a strange way, though, they are sublime works of art, rivalling any expressionist canvas of the past century.
Note the regal tones of Caesars Palace, the bountiful bouquet of Mandalay Place, the soft, almost abstract pointilism of Paris, all whispering, 'gamble, gamble' just out of the range of consciousness as people walk to the nearest slot machine.

The Church Of Google

We at the Church of Google believe the search engine Google is the closest humankind has ever come to directly experiencing an actual God. We believe there is much more evidence in favor of Google's divinity than there is for the divinity of other more traditional gods.
We reject supernatural gods on the notion they are not scientifically provable. Thus, Googlists believe Google should rightfully be given the title of 'God,' as She exhibits a great many of the characteristics traditionally associated with such Deities in a scientifically provable manner.

Museum Of Organs

A pipe organ is a musical instrument that produces sound by blowing air through a series of hollow tubes controlled by keyboards. Pipe organs are distinguished from reed organs, in which air causes thin strips of metal to vibrate.
They are also distinguished from electronic organs that use electrical devices to produce sounds similar to pipe organs. The large pipe organs used in public buildings are by far the biggest and most complicated musical instruments ever built.

Kolmanskop

Kolmanskop (or Kolmannskuppe) is a ghost town in southern Namibia, Africa. It developed after the discovery of diamonds in the area in 1908, to provide shelter for workers from the harsh environment of the Namib Desert. The village was built like a German town, with facilities like a hospital, ballroom, power station, school, skittle-alley, theater and sport-hall, casino, and ice factory.
Kolmanskop declined after World War I as diamond prices crashed. It was abandoned in 1956 but has since been partly restored. The geological forces of the desert mean that tourists can now walk through houses knee-deep in sand.

The History Of Spectacles

Many claims have been made with regard to where spectacles originated. Both China and India have their advocates, but the best evidence is that they reached these countries from Europe via circuitous routes.

Cookthink
What am I craving? That's the question we always ask ourselves when thinking about what to eat. So, wouldn't it be cool to have a tool that could listen to what we were craving and then suggest something good to cook?
Cookthink is that tool. To find a recipe based on what you're craving, tell Cookthink what you want, choose ingredients, what kind of cuisine you want and what mood you're in.
For ingredient I chose fish, for dish I chose omelet, for cuisene I decided on Latin-American and for mood sophisticated. Cookthink suggested I try fish tacos with avocado, feta and cabbage.

The synthetic fleshliness of the pink color, the obsessive square shape of the product unwrapped and ready to be shred to pieces by the power of the tongue, all compete in crashing on the senses.

In 1883, Henry Ziegland broke off a relationship with his girlfriend who, out of distress, committed suicide. The girl's brother was so enraged that he hunted down Ziegland and shot him. The brother, believing he had killed Ziegland, then turned his gun on himself and took his own life.
But Ziegland had not been killed. The bullet, in fact, had only grazed his face and then lodged in a tree. Some years later Ziegland decided to cut down the large tree, which still had the bullet in it. The task seemed so formidable that he decided to blow it up with a few sticks of dynamite. The explosion propelled the bullet into Ziegland's head, killing him.

I Want To Be Your Cat
A guy claims he can do better than your cat.I'm hiring myself out as a pet cat to anyone who wants to own me. I truly believe I would make a great pet cat, much better than your typical cat. Basically, I'll provide all the services of a pet cat, while you pay for all my food and housing, plus incidentals.
I am at my best slacking off, sitting around the house, very much like a cat. My lifelong passion and hobby is napping, and my qualifications in this field are impecabble. Sometimes I change rooms or chairs, and sometimes I even go to the front window to see what's going on in the street. At nights I like to take a nip outside and prowl around town, getting back a bit before sunrise.

Ten Accidental Product Discoveries

It is believed that the original potato chip recipe was created by chef George Crum, at Moon's Lake House near Saratoga Springs, New York, on August 24, 1853. He was fed up with a customer who continued to send his fried potatoes back, because he thought they were too thick and soggy.
Crum decided to slice the potatoes so thin that they couldn't be eaten with a fork, nor fried normally in a pan, so he decided to stir-fry the potato slices. Against Crum's expectation, the guest was ecstatic about the new chips.

100-Year-Old Monster Fish Caught

Two British anglers waded waist deep into a river to land a 100-year-old monster fish weighing over 35 stone - after battling with it for over an hour. Nick Calleya and George Carstairs landed the 500lb white Sturgeon while angling from a boat in the Fraser River in British Columbia in Canada.
Their guide microchipped the fish as part of a conservation research project before releasing it back into the river.

Why We Flirt
Single people flirt because they're single and therefore nobody is really contractually obliged to talk to them, sleep with them or scratch that difficult-to-reach part of the back.
But married people, they're a tougher puzzle. They've found themselves a suitable mate, had a bit of productive fun with the old gametes and ensured that at least some of their genes are carried into the next generation.
They've done their duty, evolutionarily speaking. Their genome will survive. So for Pete's sake, why do they persist with the game?

The Vanishing Of The Bees

Bees worldwide have been involved in a disappearing act called 'Colony Collapse Disorder' over the past two years with little sign of the disease or infestations that have resulted in massive loss of colonies in the past. The bees simply leave the hives and fail to return. Not only do the bees abandon their hive, but the queen and the brood as well. Even the predators that usually raid the hive for honey stay far away.
Beekeepers and scientists alike are stymied as to the cause of this strange phenomenon. The Vanishing of the Bees is a feature-length documentary taking a piercing investigative look at the economic, political and spiritual implications of this mysterious ecological tragedy that could topple our food chain and forever change our way of life.

The Tether Incident: Alien Encounter?

Yes, it's conspiracy time again. The NASA STS-75 mission in December 1996 ran a trial experimental tether that was to be used for towing and placing satellites into orbit. During this experiment they had a problem and the 12 mile long tether snapped due to the synthetic material accumulating a critical charge.
This was all video taped live, and what was captured on this video is absolutely incredible. NASA claims the objects in the footage are ice particles very close to the camera and are passing in front of the far away tether. But they're not!
They're passing behind the tether.

Hospital Clowns Are 'Too Scary'

Hospital chiefs have been told to avoid decorating children's wards with images of clowns as they are more likely to frighten young patients than cheer them up. A University of Sheffield, England, study of more than 250 children, aged 4 to 16, found the images were widely disliked.
Researcher Dr Penny Curtis said: As adults we make assumptions about what works for children. We found that clowns are universally disliked by children. Some found them quite frightening and unknowable.

Mona Lisa's Identity Revealed
Experts at the Heidelberg University library say dated notes scribbled in the margins of a book by one of Leonardo da Vinci's friends in October 1503 confirm once and for all that Lisa del Giocondo was the model for one of the most famous portraits in the world.
Mrs. Giocondo, whose maiden name was Gherardini, was married to Francesco del Giocondo, a wealthy silk merchant in Florence and was first linked to the painting in 1550, about 50 years after it was finished.
But doubts persisted and theories multiplied, including one about Mona Lisa being a man and another that she was Leonardo's version of the ideal female, not a real person.

Nowadays, if a cartoon character doesn't have corresponding action figures, lunch boxes, pencils and stickers, it is considered a commercial failure. The first comic strip character to be merchandized in this way was R.F. Outcault's bald, nightshirt-clad Yellow Kid.
Richard Felton Outcault was the creator of two of the most popular comic strip characters of early 20th century America, The Yellow Kid and Buster Brown. Considered to be the first popular comics character, The Yellow Kid was a New York sensation from 1895-98, appearing in two newspapers daily and creating an industry of related merchandise.

The Nazca Lines are a series of geoglyphs located in the Nazca Desert, a high arid plateau between the towns of Nazca and Palpa on the Pampas de Jumana in Peru. They were created by the Nazca culture between 200 BC and 700 AD.
There are hundreds of individual figures, ranging in complexity from simple lines to stylized hummingbirds, spiders, monkeys, fishes, sharks, llamas and lizards.
Presurfer reader Rik says he was playing around with Google Earth when he discovered a heart shaped figure with text inside. He says he doesn't know if this is a real geoglyph or a hoax. Neither do I. It can be found south of Lima.

Rods: Fact or Fiction?

Rods were discovered in 1994 with the advent of high speed video cameras. Rods, a rather new entry in
the field of cryptozoology, are said to be creatures which flit about in the air at such a high speed as to not be seen by the naked eye. Rods appear to be observational artifacts produced by rapidly flying animals.
Flying Rods are not taken seriously even by most cryptozoologists. All evidence points to the conclusion that they are mere tricks of light which result from how images are recorded and played back.

Tether Car Racing In The 1940s

Tether Cars are early style model racing cars powered by miniature gasoline engines. Tether cars were developed beginning in the 1920s-30s. First made by hobby craftsmen, tether cars were later produced in small numbers by commercial manufacturers such as Dooling Brothers, Dick McCoy, BB Korn, and many others.
Current racing activity in the U.S. is governed by the American Miniature Racing Car Association with three racetracks in NY, CA and IN. Contemporary tehter cars run at speeds of up to 200+ miles per hour giving them the reputation as fastest model cars in the world. After push-starting the car the driver desides when to take the speed measurement.

Jeep Vs. Tree

A very lucky driver.Yesterday our group went wheeling for a New Years day run. Not long into the ride one of the new Jeep Wranglers went past a fallen tree and a branch that was sticking out hooked the Jeep.
The end of the tree broke through the wheel well and almost seriously injured the driver.

Convicted: 10 Notorious Hackers Of Our Time

I'm a former hacker. Therefore I'm always wary when I read an article about hackers. The word has a bad name but it shouldn't. Old school hackers were originally known for applying expertise and skill to getting the maximum benefit out of hardware and software. They were computer enthusiasts who were highly respected and their skills helped the software and hardware industries to advance very quickly in the early days of computing.
However, hackers in general quickly became associated with crime as some of them applied their considerable expertise to illegal activities. These people shouldn't be called hackers, but crackers. Within the IT-related Universities in the USA, there is currently a debate about the usage of the word hacker and there is a proposal that it should only be associated with its original expertise-oriented meaning.
10 Notorious Hackers of Our Time features some people that in my opinion are not real hackers. Like Kevin Mitnick who got famous because his punishment was excessive. But his primary method of obtaining information was 'social engineering,' the practice of obtaining confidential information by manipulating users.
Then there's Adrian Lamo, who's only real skill was 'exploiting misconfigured proxy servers.' He didn't even know what operating system the New York Times was running when he infiltrated it via proxy server.

The Third Nipple

Approximately 2% of North Americans have a Triple-Nipple. 72% Of Triple-Nipples are on the breast area near a normal nipple, 0.3% lie on the forehead like a giant pimple. 62% Of Triple-Nipplers have low self-confidence, but 81% are ugly and lack social skills, so it's no surprise.
You should care for your Triple-Nipple as if it were yor own son or daughter. The care you give your Triple-Nipple is an expression of your character as a person, or as an interested onlooker of Triple-Nipple activity.

Grow-A-Brain Shutting Down?
Web sites come and go. When they do go, sometimes you think good riddens. Sometimes you think it's a pity. Hanan Levin of Grow-A-Brain is thinking about quitting. And I think that's a pity. I have been a visitor to his site ever since day one in 2003. His blog is the best researched blog on the Internet.
Of course the decision to quit is his, and his alone. But I hope he reconsiders. Grow-A-Brain is one of my most favorite blogs and has been a source of information ever since the day it appeared on the web.

Wedding Cake Is Full-Size Likeness Of Bride

How full of yourself can you be? Chidi Ogbuta of Allen, Texas, USA, poses with her husband, Innocent Ogbuta, on her wedding. To the left is a wedding cake in the likeness of the bride. She had a longtime fantasy of having a doll modeled after her. The cake fulfilled the bride's dream, and took about a week to finish off.
The cake, which served almost 600 people, was made by designer Nikki Jackson of 'Absolutely Edible.' To create the head, Jackson worked with a sculptor, Elizabeth Bonura.

Chocolate Poisoning In Dogs
Here's something I didn't know. Chocolate can be a poison for dogs. Chocolate contains theobromine, a compound that is a cardiac stimulant and a diuretic. When affected by an overdose of chocolate, a dog can become excited and hyperactive.
The effect of theobromine on the heart is the most dangerous effect. Theobromine will either increase the dog's heart rate or may cause the heart to beat irregularly. Death is quite possible. Here's an article about dog chocolate poisoning and how to treat it.

Soundsnap
Soundsnap is a free online sound library and community. People can upload sounds and share them with the world. Soundsnap is mainly for sound designers/recordists and music producers, filmmakers, web designer's and video game developers. It can also be useful to hobbyists for their home videos, people looking for ringtones and anyone else that needs sounds.
Soundsnap has 16 main categories and those have around 8 to 10 subcategories each. Since people can choose their own categories and the site doesn't seem to be monitored, you can sometimes find sounds that do not belong in a particular category. I found the sound of windshield wipers of a Toyota Matrix in the category animals.

Big Mouse Pad

I never understood why mouse pads are usually so very small. I always worry about the mouse falling off the pad.
Ratscar is a new Dutch brand specializing in professional gaming products. Like the Deskpad eSporter XXL, a huge mouse pad measuring 35.4 x 17.7 inches. The pad is compatible with all mice (Mechanic, Optical, Laser and Infrared).
This mouse pad is so big that if someone is right handed and another one is left handed, you could share the pad and your mice will never touch each other.

Needies
Needies are interactive plush dolls inspired by codependent, high-maintenance relationships. Totally attention-starved, they compete with each other for human affection - or, getting touch, as they like to say.
When you give Needies touch (by hugging and squeezing them), they will return your kindness with songs and shameless flattery. But remember that Needies always know when other Needies are getting touch. If one Needie is getting touch while others are neglected, the unloved Needies will conspire to take its place.

20 Super Brain Foods

We know that the foods we eat affect the body but they can have even more influence on how well our brain functions. What we eat can have a powerful affect on our brain's energy, how the mind handles tasks, and our general mood.
Some nutrients found in foods can enhance neuron firing and cross-linking in the brain. These foods can help you concentrate, increase memory, tune sensorimotor skills, keep you motivated, speed up your reaction time, control stress, and even slow down the aging of brain cells.

Ever wondered what you would look like with a different hairstyle? With HairMixer you can find out. Upload your photo or choose from several celebrities - or search the web for an image - and then adjust the picture onscreen.
Then mix your face with the hairstyle of someone else. For example, how would you look like with Oprah's hair, or Hillary's? Would you look better with Brad Pitt's hair?
Here's an example. On the left is Angelina Jolie's face with Oprah's hair, on the right Oprah's face with Angie's hair.

The Air Car

After fourteen years of research and development, ex-Formula One engineer Guy Nègre has developed an engine that could become one of the biggest technological advances of this century. Tata, India's largest automaker, is set to start producing the world's first commercial air-powered vehicle.
The Air Car uses compressed air, as opposed to the gas-and-oxygen explosions of internal-combustion models, to push its engine's pistons. The Air Car, also known as the Mini-CAT, can be refueled in minutes from an air compressor at specially equipped gas stations and can go 125 miles for $3. The top speed will be almost 70 mph and the cost of the vehicle as low as $7000.
