The Great Flood Of 1953


Today, 55 years ago, we the Dutch were once again confronted with the power of the sea. The colossal disaster happened on February the 1st 1953. It was to be one of the biggest floods in the history of the Netherlands.

A combination of spring tide and a mighty storm made the water surge over the dikes. 1,835 People drowned, 46,000 houses were damaged and 322,500 acres of land flooded.

What factors influenced the flood, where did the flood damage occur, and what was the scope of the flood?
