The 5 Deadliest Pandemics In History

The outbreak of swine flu, first in Mexico then cases all over the world, has gotten a lot of people worried. Despite the existence of scarier diseases caused by exotic viruses like Hantavirus and Ebola, influenza still reigns as the number one infectious killer in modern times.

Unlike regular seasonal epidemics of the flu, there are also rare but deadly pandemics, i.e. cases of influenza that spread on a worldwide scale and infect a large proportion of the human population.
Here's a summary of the 5 deadliest pandemics in history.

FEMA'S 'Scary Thing'

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has removed a children's coloring book from its web site following criticism over its inclusion of drawings of the September 11 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center. The coloring book, titled 'A Scary Thing Happened,' is geared towards helping kids 'cope with disasters.'

The coloring book's cover montage includes a drawing of one of the Twin Towers on fire as a plane approaches the second building. The coloring book was created in 2003 for the Freeborn County Crisis Response Team and was illustrated by Marlys Jentoft, a 68-year-old grandmother of 10. In an interview, Jentoft said she was unaware of the recent criticism of the coloring book, but would redo the drawings if asked.

10 Greatest Sideburns In The World

Ambrose Burnside was a general in the Union Army during the Civil War and later served as governor of Rhode Island and U.S. senator from that state. He was renowned for a kind of beard that was the opposite of the goatee: side whiskers and moustache, with a clean-shaven chin. The style was known, naturally, as Burnside's.

By itself, this word for his hairstyle had no meaning other than the name of its originator. But as memory of the general and senator faded, Burnside's was mistakenly heard as burnsides, a plural, seeming to refer to the two prominent sides of hair.

And so, through the effort of making a word make sense, sideburns entered American English and remained, allowing us to describe the look of Elvis Presley and others in the century to come.

Lost In Space

There are those who believe that somewhere in the vast blackness of space, about nine billion miles from the Sun, the first human is about to cross the boundary of our Solar System into interstellar space.

His body, perfectly preserved, is frozen at –454ºF; his tiny capsule has been silently sailing away from the Earth at 18,000 mph for the last 45 years. He is the original lost cosmonaut, whose rocket went up and, instead of coming back down, just kept on going.

The 'Lost Cosmonauts' debate has been reawakened thanks to a new investigation into the efforts of two ingenious, radio-mad young Italian brothers who, starting in 1957, hacked into both Russia's and NASA's space programmes – so effectively that the Russians, it seems, may have wanted them dead.

Talk Like Shakespeare

In recognition of Shakespeare's 445th Birthday, this Thursday, April 23, 2009, will be Talk Like Shakespeare Day. Shakespeare is a part of our everyday lives. He coined more than 1,700 words still in use in modern English and his plays influence the way we think about the world we live in.

How to Talk like Shakespeare:

1. Instead of you, say thou. Instead of y’all, say thee.
2. Rhymed couplets are all the rage.
3. Men are Sirrah, ladies are Mistress, and your friends are all called Cousin.
4. Instead of cursing, try calling your tormenters jackanapes or canker-blossoms or poisonous bunch-back'd toads.
5. Don't waste time saying 'it,' just use the letter 't' ('tis, t'will, I'll do't).
6. Verse for lovers, prose for ruffians, songs for clowns.
7. When in doubt, add the letters 'eth' to the end of verbs (he runneth, he trippeth, he falleth).
8. To add weight to your opinions, try starting them with methinks, mayhaps, in sooth or wherefore.
9. When wooing ladies: try comparing her to a summer's day. If that fails, say 'Get thee to a nunnery!'
10. When wooing lads: try dressing up like a man. If that fails, throw him in the Tower, banish his friends and claim the throne.

Cool Cappuccino Foam Art

There's nothing quite like the surprise of ordering a run-of-the-mill cappuccino, only to discover that the steaming-hot pick-me-up has been topped off with a special artistic touch - all delicately rendered in chocolate syrup and foam.

Cappuccino art always has a way of leaving us amazed by the talent it takes to create these impossibly realistic renditions of animals, fruit and more. From the sweet image of a floating straw hat to an irresistible version of a snuggly-faced panda, we vote the swirly sensations below the best-brewed designs of their kind.

The Chariot Which Lets Amputees 'Stand Tall And Walk'

Amputees and people with difficulty standing could soon move using a 'wearable transportation device' that gives the effect of walking. Exmovere Holdings from Virginia, USA, has unveiled a self-balancing, hands-free concept vehicle called the Chariot, which is controlled by subtle movements of the lower torso and hips.

Sensors inside the cocoon-like shell of the vehicle interpret gentle pressure changes from the wearer's body to predict their intended motion and carry out the action.

Archaeologists Will Search Sites for Possible Cleopatra Tomb

Archaeologists in Egypt next week begin excavating sites that may contain the tomb of Cleopatra and Mark Antony, whose doomed love story has inspired writers and filmmakers for decades.

A radar survey last month of the temple of Taposiris Magna near the Mediterranean Sea found three deep shafts inside the temple that were possibly 'the tombs of important people,' the Supreme Council of Antiquities said in an e-mailed statement today.

The expedition has also found a bust of Cleopatra made of alabaster, 22 coins bearing her image, as well as a mask believed to belong to Mark Antony, said the statement.

Circuitry Snacks

Evil Mad Scientist Laboratories presents what is arguably the tastiest way to design and learn about electronic circuits: make circuitry snacks! They begin by gathering up appropriate snack-food building blocks and making food-based models of electronic components.

Bokito Viewer

On May 18, 2008, a gorilla named Bokito escaped from Rotterdam Zoo in the Netherlands. During his escape the animal attacked a female visitor, who had frequent eye contact with the animal. This presumably led to the attack, since gorillas do not like direct eye contact.

Dutch health insurance company FBTO always offers simple solutions, so they distributed more than 2,000 so-called Bokito Viewers at the entrance to Rotterdam Zoo.

From Portugal To POTUS: The Truth About The President's Pooch

This week the White House welcomed a new member into the household, a six-month-old Portuguese water dog named Bo. Until that moment little was known about the breed.

Behind the shaggy good looks there lies a remarkable story of species survival. By the 1930s the dog was on the verge of extinction. Bo and his breed almost didn't make it at all.

The Smallest Airplanes In The World

This is not about remote controlled or paper airplanes. This is about the smallest manned planes in the world. The first plane to be so titled was known as the Wee Bee. The diminutive plane was designed, built, and flown by Ken Coward, William Chana, and Karl Montijo in San Diego, California, during the late 1940s.

Just over 14 ft long and with a wingspan of only 18 ft, the Wee Bee was powered by a 30-hp piston engine and could carry a maximum of 200 lb, including the pilot and fuel. Weight was kept to a minimum by having the pilot lay in a prone position atop the fuselage.

Corporate Gibberish Generator

At The Presurfer, we understand how to architect holistically. Our functionality is unparalleled, but our user-centric implementation and simple use is often considered an amazing achievement. Think customized. Think user-defined. Think resource-constrained. But don't think all three at the same time.

If you synthesize seamlessly, you may have to strategize intra-magnetically. We apply the proverb 'All that glitters is not gold' not only to our bandwidth but our capability to drive. The capacity to empower dynamically leads to the aptitude to empower strategically.

What a statement that is, huh? If only I could understand what it really means. Actually, it means nothing.

The Rainbow That Can Fly

There is something about the Rainbow Finch that makes it look like an animal made up, using Photoshop. The colors seem too bright to be real and each garish hue ends abruptly to be replaced by one equally as preposterous for a wild animal.

It can often cause misunderstanding and unnecessary embarrassment for the innocent others. This chair announces who the gas is from by amplifying the silent fart exhausted.

Kris Kuksi Artworks

Kris Kuksi's art speaks of a timelessness–potentiality and motion attempting to reach on forever, and yet pessimistically delayed; forced into the stillness of death and eternal sleep. He treats morbidity with a sympathetic touch and symbolizes the paradox of the death of the individual by objective personification of death.

There is a fear of this consciousness because it drops in upon us without mercy, and yet there is a need to appeal to it in order to provide a sense of security, however deluded that sense may be. Kuksi's art warns us that this appeal is irrelevant, and that we should be slow to create a need for it.
