The 5 Deadliest Pandemics In History
The outbreak of swine flu, first in Mexico then cases all over the world, has gotten a lot of people worried. Despite the existence of scarier diseases caused by exotic viruses like Hantavirus and Ebola, influenza still reigns as the number one infectious killer in modern times.
Unlike regular seasonal epidemics of the flu, there are also rare but deadly pandemics, i.e. cases of influenza that spread on a worldwide scale and infect a large proportion of the human population.
Here's a summary of the 5 deadliest pandemics in history.

FEMA'S 'Scary Thing'
The Federal Emergency Management Agency has removed a children's coloring book from its web site following criticism over its inclusion of drawings of the September 11 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center. The coloring book, titled 'A Scary Thing Happened,' is geared towards helping kids 'cope with disasters.'
The coloring book's cover montage includes a drawing of one of the Twin Towers on fire as a plane approaches the second building. The coloring book was created in 2003 for the Freeborn County Crisis Response Team and was illustrated by Marlys Jentoft, a 68-year-old grandmother of 10. In an interview, Jentoft said she was unaware of the recent criticism of the coloring book, but would redo the drawings if asked.

10 Of The Most Famous Office Buildings From Around The World

It is no coincidence that the vast majority of the world's most famous buildings are used as offices. Governments and multinational companies that commission and inhabit such buildings are the only organisations with the power and money necessary to create constructions that are large, cutting-edge and ultimately impressive enough to
become famous.
Here are some examples of striking office buildings built from the mid 18th century, right up to 2004 and incorporates a range of styles and materials.

10 Greatest Sideburns In The World

Ambrose Burnside was a general in the Union Army during the Civil War and later served as governor of Rhode Island and U.S. senator from that state. He was renowned for a kind of beard that was the opposite of the goatee: side whiskers and moustache, with a clean-shaven chin. The style was known, naturally, as Burnside's.
By itself, this word for his hairstyle had no meaning other than the name of its originator. But as memory of the general and senator faded, Burnside's was mistakenly heard as burnsides, a plural, seeming to refer to the two prominent sides of hair.
And so, through the effort of making a word make sense, sideburns entered American English and remained, allowing us to describe the look of Elvis Presley and others in the century to come.

Lost In Space
There are those who believe that somewhere in the vast blackness of space, about nine billion miles from the Sun, the first human is about to cross the boundary of our Solar System into interstellar space.
His body, perfectly preserved, is frozen at –454ºF; his tiny capsule has been silently sailing away from the Earth at 18,000 mph for the last 45 years. He is the original lost cosmonaut, whose rocket went up and, instead of coming back down, just kept on going.
The 'Lost Cosmonauts' debate has been reawakened thanks to a new investigation into the efforts of two ingenious, radio-mad young Italian brothers who, starting in 1957, hacked into both Russia's and NASA's space programmes – so effectively that the Russians, it seems, may have wanted them dead.

One way around that has been for photographers to peer inside from across the border, a pastime that has also spurred a level of curious tourism in both neighboring South Korea and China. A mole can be either subdermal (under the skin) or a pigmented growth on the skin, formed mostly of a type of cell known as a melanocyte. Talk Like Shakespeare

In recognition of Shakespeare's 445th Birthday, this Thursday, April 23, 2009, will be Talk Like Shakespeare Day. Shakespeare is a part of our everyday lives. He coined more than 1,700 words still in use in modern English and his plays influence the way we think about the world we live in.
How to Talk like Shakespeare:
1. Instead of you, say thou. Instead of y’all, say thee.
2. Rhymed couplets are all the rage.
3. Men are Sirrah, ladies are Mistress, and your friends are all called Cousin.
4. Instead of cursing, try calling your tormenters jackanapes or canker-blossoms or poisonous bunch-back'd toads.
5. Don't waste time saying 'it,' just use the letter 't' ('tis, t'will, I'll do't).
6. Verse for lovers, prose for ruffians, songs for clowns.
7. When in doubt, add the letters 'eth' to the end of verbs (he runneth, he trippeth, he falleth).
8. To add weight to your opinions, try starting them with methinks, mayhaps, in sooth or wherefore.
9. When wooing ladies: try comparing her to a summer's day. If that fails, say 'Get thee to a nunnery!'
10. When wooing lads: try dressing up like a man. If that fails, throw him in the Tower, banish his friends and claim the throne.

How Music Affects Us And Promotes Health

Music is one of the few activities that involves using the whole brain. It's intrinsic to all cultures and can have surprising benefits not only for learning language, improving memory and focusing attention, but also for physical coordination and development.
Of course, music can be distracting if it's too loud or too jarring, or if it competes for our attention with what we're trying to do. But for the most part, exposure to many kinds of music has beneficial effects.

13 Patent-Holding Celebrity Inventors
When we think of inventors, the image that comes to mind is usually that of a frazzled scientist toiling away in a lab, not celebrities pulled from the pages of Us Weekly. However, a number of well-known public figures hold patents for various innovations.
For example, Gary Burghoff, the man who played Radar on M*A*S*H, invented a device he calls 'Chum Magic,' a floating apparatus that fishermen can fill with chum to lure fish to their boats. He received a patent for the device in 1992.

Printer Uses Coffee Or Tea Dregs

The RITI printer designede by Korean Jeon Hwan Ju, is an eco-friendly printer based on the concept of a new ink system. The RITI printer uses coffee or tea dregs. The user places the coffee or tea dregs into the ink case located on the top of the printer, then insert a piece of paper in the middle. Moving the ink case left and right will print your image, and as you draw on the paper, dregs inscript on the paper just like ink.
Using coffee or tea dregs as ink saves the cost buying ink, the burden of wasted things, and users' work. Furthermore, since the user moves the ink case in order to make a print, the device doesn't need electricity.

The expedition has also found a bust of Cleopatra made of alabaster, 22 coins bearing her image, as well as a mask believed to belong to Mark Antony, said the statement.

The Smallest Airplanes In The World

This is not about remote controlled or paper airplanes. This is about the smallest manned planes in the world. The first plane to be so titled was known as the Wee Bee. The diminutive plane was designed, built, and flown by Ken Coward, William Chana, and Karl Montijo in San Diego, California, during the late 1940s.
Just over 14 ft long and with a wingspan of only 18 ft, the Wee Bee was powered by a 30-hp piston engine and could carry a maximum of 200 lb, including the pilot and fuel. Weight was kept to a minimum by having the pilot lay in a prone position atop the fuselage.

Corporate Gibberish Generator

At The Presurfer, we understand how to architect holistically. Our functionality is unparalleled, but our user-centric implementation and simple use is often considered an amazing achievement. Think customized. Think user-defined. Think resource-constrained. But don't think all three at the same time.
If you synthesize seamlessly, you may have to strategize intra-magnetically. We apply the proverb 'All that glitters is not gold' not only to our bandwidth but our capability to drive. The capacity to empower dynamically leads to the aptitude to empower strategically.
What a statement that is, huh? If only I could understand what it really means. Actually, it means nothing.
It was created with help of the Corporate Gibberish Generator.

The Rainbow That Can Fly

There is something about the Rainbow Finch that makes it look like an animal made up, using Photoshop. The colors seem too bright to be real and each garish hue ends abruptly to be replaced by one equally as preposterous for a wild animal.

6 Massive Old School Printers (And How They Were Advertised)

Whoever said size doesn't matter is a liar. Old school printers weren't made to be compact or to be hidden away underneath a desk. They were made to be seen. They were brash, aggressive, and usually needed a pretty young lady to accompany them, or so their advertisements would have you believe.
So cast your mind back around 30 years or so, and enjoy some of the biggest, baddest printers that the world has ever seen.

Chairs For The Dysfunctional
Designer Alice Wang says: Should there be different chairs designed for people with different sitting habits? Do you sit on all four legs or just two? Do you continuously shake your leg? Or do you like to sit with your back facing the public?
The chair above is called 'Silent Farter.'Those with excess gas in their abdomen can find it difficult to hold it in sometimes, even at important times such as formal dinner gatherings or meetings. Quietly letting the gas out may be the solution, but although the sound may be muted, the scent is still present.
It can often cause misunderstanding and unnecessary embarrassment for the innocent others. This chair announces who the gas is from by amplifying the silent fart exhausted.

Kris Kuksi Artworks

Kris Kuksi's art speaks of a timelessness–potentiality and motion attempting to reach on forever, and yet pessimistically delayed; forced into the stillness of death and eternal sleep. He treats morbidity with a sympathetic touch and symbolizes the paradox of the death of the individual by objective personification of death.
There is a fear of this consciousness because it drops in upon us without mercy, and yet there is a need to appeal to it in order to provide a sense of security, however deluded that sense may be. Kuksi's art warns us that this appeal is irrelevant, and that we should be slow to create a need for it.

How Much Water Do You Use?

As we become more and more aware that we may be using water at an unsustainable pace, the idea of water footprints - the amount of water an individual uses -is becoming more common. Water footprints can be hard to calculate, depending on how far up the chain of production you go, since everything you eat and buy used some water to produce.
Here are some examples of how much water is used in some of your daily activities, so that you can begin calculate your footprint and try to reduce your gallons.
