The first IKEA store opened in 1958 in Älmhult, Sweden. The first store in the USA opened in 1985 in Philadelphia. IKEA now has 332 stores all over the world.
The history of IKEA goes back over 70 years. It took 15 years before the first store opened. Expansion has been slow compared, to other big box stores, but IKEA has been global from its' early days. Watch the expansion of IKEA through the years.

Having recently been to Cheng Du, China I saw they had an Ikea store there. It was not doing very much business because 'do-it yourself' anything is frowned upon in China. They insist on hiring someone to do home repairs, put furniture together, etc. Sooo, Ikea has now found out that their type of store is really not very popular in China. For now...
