Just wanted to comment that these animals did not "give" their lives. They were taken.
You're right! But 'gave their lives' is a common used expression.
I suspect that saying that the animals "gave their lives" makes the author feel better than saying that these animals were no better treated than laboratory beagles being forced to smoke.
