Outrageously Politically Incorrect Adverts

In a politically correct age, they seem like outrageous anachronisms. And there is no doubt these adverts - many taken from the first half of the last century - reveal just how much women used to be caricatured as downtrodden housewives or hair-brained office girls.
If these adverts were released today, they would surely cause a howl of protest.

Morality Quiz

Morality refers to ethical issues - principles of right and wrong conduct - as well as instances of real behaviour - the manner in which individuals comply more or less fully with such standards.
Time has a Morality Quiz which offers some of the dilemmas used to study human morality. Here's an example:
It's war time, and you're hiding in a basement with a group of other people. Enemy soldiers are approaching outside and will be drawn to any sound. If you're found, you'll all be killed immediately.
A baby hiding with you starts to cry loudly and cannot be stopped. Smothering it to death is the only way to silence it, saving the lives of everyone in the room. Could you be the one who smothered it if no one else would?
55% Said they could!
Take the Morality Quiz to see how you compare to others.

Peaceful Progression Smoke Alarm

Awake to your next fire calm and refreshed with DigiPliance's Peaceful Progression Smoke Alarm. Choose the perfect way for your family to wake up - from the peaceful sounds of the rainforest, to the celebration of Dixieland jazz, or the hot pulse of the Caribbean - because a fire doesn't have to be a disaster.
No, the products aren't real. But the empty boxes are. Wrap your otherwise forgettable gift in an Onion gift box, and watch as they struggle to feign enthusiasm for a smoke detector that would probably kill them. Or take joy as their faces fall upon realizing there is no such thing as a smoke alarm that awakes them with ambient light and soothing odors - just a crappy bric-a-brac inside you waited until the last moment to buy.

Foodpairing

Food combines with each other when they have major flavour components in common. A list was made of 250 food products each with their major flavour components. By comparing the flavour of each food product eg strawberry with the rest of the food and their flavours, new combinations like strawberry with peas can be made.
The way to use it, is just to select a food product like strawberries. You will get a plot where you have strawberry in the middle surrounded by other food products. Take one of those other food products and try to make a new recipe by combining those two. The more flavours food products have in common the shorter the distance between the food products.

Color Changing Paint?
Scientists have developed a new form of auto paint that changes color with the touch of a button. This revolutionary new paramagnetic paint is a technical wonder and is viewed by Nissan and other auto companies as an amazing innovation that would draw huge traffic to dealerships and will make it easier for consumers to get the exact option level they want on a car without the sacrifice of their favorite color.
This article appeared on NextEnergyNews.com around November 6. Turns out Nissan has no idea where this current web urban legend originated from and they confirmed that they aren't developing color changing paint.

Sanctuary Of Rome's 'Founder' Revealed

Archaeologists unveiled an underground grotto believed to have been revered by ancient Romans as the place where a wolf nursed the city's legendary founder Romulus and his twin brother Remus.
Decorated with seashells and colored marble, the vaulted sanctuary is buried 52 feet inside the Palatine hill, the palatial center of power in imperial Rome.
The archaeologists are convinced that they have found the place of worship where Romans believed a she-wolf suckled Romulus and Remus, the twin sons of the god of war Mars who were abandoned in a basket and left adrift on the Tiber.

Angola is littered with thousands of landmines all over the country. In 23 years, over 80,000 people had died or lost limbs due to one wrong step.

The most beautiful and the most visited flower garden in the world is Keukenhof Gardens here in the Netherlands. It's a 70-acre showcase for the Dutch flower industry. Visitors can see a changing display of more than 7 million flowers - including some 1,000 varieties of tulips alone.
Where Keukenhof is situated now, was a hunting area in the 15th century. Herbs for the kitchen of the castle of Jacoba of Bavaria were also collected here; hence the name Keukenhof (keuken = kitchen, hof = garden).

A Psychological Optical Illusion

The influence of culture and environment can have an effect on our visual perception. This theory was first explored by Robert Laws, a Scottish missionary working in Malawi, Africa, during the late 1800's.
Take a look at the picture above. What you see will largely depend on where you live in the world. After you have examined the picture, read the Eyes and Vision website for a more detailed explanation.

Ordering Pizza In 2010
Data mining is the process of automatically searching large volumes of data for patterns. A simple example of data mining is its use for retail sales. If a clothing store records the purchases of customers, a data mining system could identify those customers who favour silk shirts over cotton ones.
Here's an example of data mining. Don't think this isn't going to happen because it is. And if this wasn't so funny, it would be really scary.

The 'Elvis Is Alive' Museum
Discovering the truth that Elvis never actually 'left the building,' 80-year-old Missourian, Bill Beeny (pictured above), opened the 'Elvis Is Alive Museum' 15 years ago to tell the world his story.
The museum is home to thousands of pages of FBI files which shows Elvis' involvement with the FBI and DEA as an agent, the DNA sample analysis which proved the body in the coroner's report was that of a different man, handwriting and voiceprint files from 'The King' discovered after his supposed death, and hundreds of facts refuting the notion that Elvis Presley had departed from this world.

US Coast Guard Mascots
Since mankind first took to the seas thousands of years ago, they always brought along members of the animal kingdom with them on board their ships. The animals were brought along for many reasons, such as a source of food, to fight rodent infestations, or for companionship.
Coast Guard crews followed this ancient custom and adopted numerous varieties of mammals and birds, among others, as mascots and brought them along on their voyages. Many times these animals were actually enlisted in the service, complete with service and medical records, uniforms, and their own bunks.
Here is a sampling of some of those members of the animal kingdom who kept the crews of cutters and shore stations company, sharing in their hardships and dangers, and making life a little more tolerable just by being aboard.

Caligynephobia
Yesterday I stumbled upon an article on unwarranted fears and discovered there was a phobia called Caligynephobia, the fear of beautiful women. At first I didn't believe someone could actually be afraid of a beautiful woman. But it's true, Caligynephobia does exist.Caligynephobia, also called Venustraphobia, is the persistent and unwarranted fear of beautiful women, often experienced when physically interacting with an attractive female. Caligynephobia is estimated to effect approximately 0.47% of males in Britain, and 0.61% in America.
Its effects ultimately lead to a decrease in social and business activities, as communication with alluring women is generally attempted to be avoided where possible. Thus symptoms are easily detectible and mostly harmless. They include shortness of breath, irregular heartbeat, perspiration, nausea and overal feeling of dread.
For all those suffering from the fear of beautiful women, there's an effective treatment for Caligynephobia.

The Gimli Glider
A brand new Air Canada Boeing 767, Flight 143, was outbound over Red Lake Ontario at 41,000 feet. The Engine Indicator and Crew Alerting System beeped four times in quick succession, alerting them to a fuel pressure problem.
When a second fuel pressure warning light came on, captain Pearson felt it was too much of a coincidence and made a decision to divert to Winnipeg. Flight 143 requested an emergency clearance and began a gradual descent to 28,000 feet.
The 120-tonne, $40-million plane becomes a glider, dropping at over 600 metres per minute with no hope of reaching Winnipeg. Amazingly, the powerless plane makes a successful emergency landing at an abandoned airbase in Gimli, Manitoba.

Bananas Anyone?
Yesterday, thousands of bananas washed up here in the Netherlands on two North Sea islands. At least six containers fell off a cargo ship in a storm and at least one burst open.
A half-mile stretch of beach on Terschelling island, 70 miles north of Amsterdam, was littered with bunches of unripe fruit from Cuba. Bananas also washed up on neighboring Ameland island.

Weird And Wonderful Foreign Phrases
English is a rich and wonderful language - but sometimes it's just not good enough. For example, have you ever searched around in vain for a word to describe someone who gets excited by eating garlic? Or wondered why there isn't a nice pithy term for a person who is only attractive if they're standing quite far away?
Other languages do have such words. Some examples:
Hira Hira - Japanese: the feeling you get when you walk into a dark and decrepit old house in the middle of the night.
Dona - Chile: to take lice from a person's head and squash between one's teeth.
Baffona - Italian: an attractive moustachioed woman.
Poronkusema - Finnish: the distance equal to how far a reindeer can travel without a comfort break.

How To Paint Your Shoes
If you are going to paint shoes, choose something sturdy. Canvas shoes can be painted, and don't require a white undercoat the way leather does. The more the shoe bends, the softer the leather or canvas, the more cracks will appear in the dried paint. If you are going to use leather, start with black.

Sharkwater
For filmmaker Rob Stewart, exploring sharks began as an underwater adventure. What it turned into was a beautiful and dangerous life journey into the balance of life on earth. Driven by passion fed from a lifelong fascination with sharks, Stewart debunks historical stereotypes and media depictions of sharks as bloodthirsty, man-eating monsters and reveals the reality of sharks as pillars in the evolution of the seas.
Filmed in visually stunning, high definition video, Sharkwater takes you into the most shark rich waters of the world, exposing the exploitation and corruption surrounding the world's shark populations in the marine reserves of Cocos Island, Costa Rica and the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador.
