How can convicted murderers, bandits, deserters, and animal thieves excite popular imagination to the point of acquiring the status of folk heroes?
Even though modern mass media exposure can certainly help engrave an outlaw's image in the collective consciousness, the phenomenon is far from new, and word-of-mouth has frequently served in the creation of local and national legends around such infamous 'heroes.'
