Alas, the American elm is the victim of a blight - nothing personal, but it's the Dutch elm disease, spread by a beetle that gets under the bark. There's no known cure. Elms still sprout, and grow for a while, but they die young, and old ones have been dying off for the last half century or more. Few big ones are left. Although it's autumn and elms go bare a bit earlier than some other trees, this one looks dead.

Lots of old tree need to come down before they get blown down.
