These cat-sized rats may look terrifying - but they are one of man's best friends in Africa. The foot-long Gambian pouched rats are being trained in landmine detection in a pioneering project at Tanzania's Sokoine University of Agriculture.
The HeroRats - as the project monikers them - train all day in fields, sniffing the ground and scratching at it when they find a 'mine'. They are then rewarded with a piece of banana or other food.
