Buckling Instability Of Crown Sealing

The entry of spherical projectiles into liquid pools creates a beautiful splash. This video presents recent observations of a particular instability of this phenomenon, which occurs just before the splash closes at the surface of the liquid. It's called the 'buckling instability,' whereby discrete ridges form along the splash wall, in a similar fashion to the wrapping of hard candies.
