Andrew Clemens (1857-1894) was a deaf mute sand artist from Iowa, USA. Clemens formed his pictures by compressing natural colored sands inside chemists jars to create his works of art.
At the tender age of 5, Clemens lost his hearing and voice to encephalitis. After he graduated at the age of 17 from the Iowa Institute for the Education of the Deaf and Dumb in Council Bluffs, he began to experiment with sand art.
