As you're probably aware, department stores are dropping like flies, dragging down entire shopping malls with them. But 60 years ago, these same department stores were the way to the future.
Modernist innovator Raymond Loewy revamped the fusty old department store into a modern space that made spending money easy. Thanks to department stores, Modernism had a vehicle to move out of lofty urban art galleries and into the average suburban family home in the '50s and '60s.
