You have a square fish tank with the water level almost to the top. Without using any kind of measuring apparatus how can you empty the required amount of water so that the tank will be left exactly half full?

this works for any fishtank, regardless of whether it is a 'square' (the word should be 'cubic' actually). any rectilinear volume will be divided in half by the diagonal which runs corner to diametrically opposed corner
