The springs of the San Marcos River have plenty of extraordinary traits: Every day they release over 100 million gallons of water. They form the primary habitat for several endangered species, and one of the longest-inhabited places in North America. But the most magical thing about the springs is actually no longer there - its unique submersible theater, or 'Aquarena,' which once gave audiences a window into an underwater world of mermaids, clowns, and a swimming pig named Ralph.
Collectors Weekly spoke with some mermaids about their experiences at Aquarena Springs, who often performed for eight hours a day in any weather.

Gerard, I lived in San Marcos for three years in the 80's. We used to get off work and snorkel the San Marcos river in the hot summer heat. The life in this river is amazing. There are caves with blind salamanders and other creatures in and around the abundant plant life as you drift down this clear river within the city limits. Alas, the mill is still there, but the restaurant has been turned into a chain fast food place. Thanks for the post. Great memories. Thanks for the post.
