California Cool: How The Wetsuit Became The Surfer's Second Skin

When Bob Meistrell, the co-founder of Body Glove, started surfing in the early 1950s, 20 minutes was all he could stand in the frigid, Santa Cruz water. Despite the adrenaline rush, after three or four good waves, the was hightailing it back to a dry towel in the warmth of his car.

This is a sharp contrast to popular depictions of early American surf-culture, which are all skimpy swimsuits and suntanned skin. But most California beaches were simply too cold for surfers to get their fix, inspiring pioneers like Meistrell to start tinkering with some creative solutions.
