All Stand Please For The Mini Horn Section

Fresh from recording all 205 national anthems to be played at this summer's Olympic Games, the London Philharmonic Orchestra has teamed up with Mini for one more performance. All stand please for conductor Gareth Newman and the London 2012 Limited Edition Mini's unique tribute to Team GB.

BMWs attempts to market their Mini as cool actually prevent it from being cool. It might be fashionable, it might be on trend (whatever that means) but it just isn't cool.

Cool has to make itself, the original Mini's cool worked like that. With that car people bought them as workaday cars. Then a few people noticed their potential for competition. Nobody, however, thought of them as cool. Then some time in the mid to late sixties they seemed to fit with the zeitgeist and they were cool. To this day an original Mini is still a cool car.

The BMW zero series tries to ride on the coat tails of that, but fails. One of the things that made the original car so cool was the feeling that everyboy from racing drivers to vicars, royals to district nurses and movie stars to your granny drove them, it had no niche. The trouble with the new car is that in trying desperately to make it fashionable BMW have created a niche. No niche car is cool.
