Yes, very nice! I like it. But what if your in a collision and the electrial system is shut off. How do you get out? Break the window and climb out?
Neat trick, but it's one of those "inventions" that nobody actually needs. Furthermore I see plenty of engineering challenges in the implementation. Being so long with no central support at the B pillar would mean the door would need to be thicker than a conventional door to comply with side impact regs. Then there are the sills. The sills are a very important part of the monocoque and have to be very strong to make the shell stiff, where there is no B pillar they need to be even stronger. In order to be strong they tend to be bulky and bulky sills are at odds with the need to stow that door.
Then theres the issue of how well those doors function after an impact. You really want your doors to open after an impact. Design engineers go to great lengths to ensure that their doors will open after impacts from all sorts of angles. How well, for example, would these doors open after a hard frontal impact?
@Gareth: right on.
Gareth makes some good points. Most of which are directly answered in the video. I think, though, the central issue is that we're looking at some fifteen year old footage. Company website is a little less than 'current' in many senses of the word. I think we're seeing an older promotional film of a company and idea that's been around for a while. copyright date on the video of 2007 doesn't hide the fact that we're eyeballing some early 90's vehicles and fashions.
