Irish Town Name Deemed Offensive By Facebook

For most people adding the name of where they live on Facebook is relatively straightforward. A problem, however, arises when the place where you live is seemingly branded as offensive by the social networking site. One woman from Effin in County Limerick in the Irish Republic has so far been unable to add the village name to the 'home place' section of her Facebook profile.

Effin (in Irish: Eifinn, meaning 'place of St Effin') is a more publicly usable alternative for the F-word. Ann Marie Kennedy, who works in the department of nursing and midwifery at the University of Limerick, has now started an online campaign to get Effin recognised.

That's kind of odd, since I've seen people use the actual F word (all spelled out) in their comments.

If she's so damned proud to be Irish why can't she use the Irish spelling? I'd guess that it's nothing to do with profanity, but the Facebook have a list of placenames and a lot of small villages aren't on it.

Of course if she were to try using the Irish spelling she would soon find out if that was rejected as well. If it was rejected then that would disprove her silly little theory about profanity wouldn't it?
