The Evolution Of Swing Sets

Swing sets today have made great strides since their beginning at the turn of the 20th century. Strides in swing set safety and educational opportunities have lead us to the natural, safe wooden swing set designs of 2011. Check out this infographic on the 'Evolution of Swing Sets.'

I thought it curious that injuries were blamed on steel structures (most injuries are from falls), and the growth of wooden structures was touted (wooden play structures are very rare where I live) until I got to the bottom of the graphic. LOL

Hi Slab99, I'm the researcher for this infographic. It's so cool of you to comment.

You're right. A lot of injuries that popped up in the 70's and 80's were from falls. The main reason is the swing sets were getting taller and taller, making the falls bigger and bigger. Wooden swing sets came in around 1975 and got more and more popular throughout the 80's until now. But, they were typically shorter than their multi-tiered predecessors. Through the 90's and 00's (between 2000 and 2010) all swing sets have been getting shorter - back to two tiers instead of 3 or more.
