What would jazz look like if it had a physical presence? According to Sherry Ann Byrd it might look something like the hand-made 'M-provisational' quilts produced by six generations of her family, who descended from a former slave named Edward 'Ned' Titus in Freestone County, Texas.
Her family's creations are explosions of fabric and colors with sometimes hard-to-discern patterns and a logic all their own. The improvisation is visible in each quilt, as mismatched swatches seem to flow together into one pleasing whole. Some have clear patterns, but with uneven lines and unexpected changes in color or order.
