Social Networking Sites Are a 'Modern Form Of Madness'

The way in which people frantically communicate online via social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook can be seen as a modern form of madness, according to Sherry Turkle, a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

She says that people are become isolated from reality due to such social networking sites because technology is dominating our lives and making us 'less human' and under the illusion of allowing us to communicate better, technology is actually isolating us from real human interactions in a cyber-reality that is a poor imitation of the real world.

I think people drifted away from the real world (and the human interactions within it) about the same time televisions became common household objects.

Social interaction is what society and civiliation is all about. It does not matter what kind of interaction it is. She seems to be comparing it to some kind of ideal uptopia. I grew up in a small town and has limited communication with my peers as they lived on the other side of town. Not like in a big city where you can walk around the block and see 20 friends. In many ways I am in better contact with these people know than when we were in school. I sat in my room with the 3 TV stations wishing I had something more to do. Now kids can talk to other kids all the time. THAT IS MORE COMMUNICATION NOT LESS
