The 1886 Benz Motorwagen

Footage of the world's first car's engine igniting and running. The car, developed by Karl Benz, is widely regarded as the first purpose-built automobile. Benz unveiled it officially on July 3, 1886 in Mannheim, Germany.

It's an early prototype of the Chevrolet Corvair, but with more simplicity and reliability.

I never quite understood why this particular automobile was considered the first. There had been plenty of steam driven carriages before this.
