Shivaji Marahaj was born in 1627 as the son of Shahji Bonsale, a kingmaker in the Moslem kingdoms of Ahmagnagar and Bijapur in the Deccan. Shivaji began his career by gathering round him bands of the hardy peasantry called the Mavales and waging guerrilla wars against the kingdom of Bijapur.
One of the greatest military geniuses in Indian History who perfected the art of guerrilla warfare, and one of the few Indian rulers who realised the importance of guarding the seas, Shivaji left a great administrative system which helped consolidation and expansion of the Martha Empire.
