Mary Lurancy Vennum was born in April 1864 in Milford, a small town near Watseka in eastern Illinois, USA.
She had an ordinary, remarkable childhood until, for sixteen weeks in 1878, her body was supposedly possessed by the spirit of Mary Roff, another Watseka native who had died in a mental institution thirteen years previously.
