A Village With No Roads

Can you imagine a village with no roads? There is such an unique place in the Netherlands called Giethoorn (pronounced 'geethorn'). There are no roads, and cars have to remain outside the village.

The only access to the stunningly lovely houses in Giethoorn is by water, or on foot over tiny individual wooden bridges. I've been there myself and it truly is idyllic.

More about Giethoorn.

It is very lovely and idyllic, but what about hauling things, e.g. furniture, food, etc...? www.satisfiedsole.com

That's all done by boat.

Mackinaw Island has a parallel concept. While they do have roads, only the fire truck is allowed to have an engine. All other travel is by bicycle or horse-drawn means.

It looks like a beautiful place but I would think the motors (gas and oil) on the boats would pollute the waters. I wonder the prices of the homes cost there. I once you are lucky to move in you probably don't ever move out. I wouldn't mind living there.

Sounds fantastic. I'd probably get a row boat, though, so as not to intrude upon the sounds.

According to the link, the boats used are electric and quiet.

You find these type of villages in the Amazon rainforest as well.

I wonder about winter when those canals are frozen. Footpaths will get you to you car, I suppose, but what about hauling stuff like furniture.

All I can think is, what if someone needs to be rushed to the hospital. :/
