Danish Hotel Offers Pedalpower Free Meal

The Crown Plaza Hotel in Copenhagen, Denmark, is offering a free meal to any guest who is able to produce electricity for the hotel on an exercise bike attached to a generator.

Guests will have to produce at least 10 watt hours of electricity - roughly 15 minutes of cycling for someone of average fitness. They will then be given meal vouchers worth $36 (26 euros).

(thanks Cora)

I don't get it . . . 1 KW hour of electricity costs between 9 cents and 20 cents (US dollars). Where I live it is 9 cents. So this hotel is giving away $36 dollar vouchers (perhaps a real cost to the hotel of $10) for about 2 cents worth of electricity (maybe in Copenhagen it is more like 5 cents). The idea of human power is intriguing, but to me this perpetuates a myth that people on a bicycle can generate a meaningful amount of power, which with today's technology is just not true. Better would be to give the voucher to guests who arrive via bicycle.
