Carlos Slim is definitely old school. He's of the tried and true "guerrilla billionaire" strategy: buy lots of businesses and either keep them for the cash flow or fix 'em up and sell them. The goal is to make money off a lot of deals instead of a killing on just one.
It's easier to make a million dollars when you already have a million dollars, and it's even easier if you just steal the first million. This guy literally ripped off the mexican national telephone company in the early 90's. From one day to the other he and his partners became the owners of the government owned -until that day- mexican phone company with everything in it. He paid cents on the dollar for it, helped by the worst and most corrupt president ever known to Mexicans (and we've had some bad ones), Carlos Salinas (period 1988-1994). From that day every phone bill in Mexico was paid to Carlos Slim. Look it up, it's all in google.
