Henrietta Lacks' 'Immortal' Cells

Henrietta Lacks was a black tobacco farmer from southern Virginia who got cervical cancer when she was 30.

She was the unwitting donor of cells from her cancerous tumor, which were cultured by George Otto Gey at John Hopkins to create an immortal cell line for medical research. This is now known as the HeLa cell line. No one knows why, but her cells never died.
