The 56 Ethnic Groups Of China

The Han Chinese are the largest ethnic group, with 1,2 billion people, or 91.59% of the population of China. Besides the majority Han Chinese, China recognizes 55 other 'nationalities' or ethnic groups, numbering approximately 105 million persons.

Photographer Chen Hai Wen led a team of 14 professional photographers to make a family portrait of all 56 nationalities in China. Pictured above are the Yi people.

That is so fascinating. Wish there was a map included! Their clothing tells so much about where they are from: what dyes were available, whether looms or needles were discovered early. Thanks for this!

Extraordinary photos; too bad they look like they were taken at the Wal Mart photo studio instead of the real world.
