This trait may have been caused as a side affect of another adaptive mechanism or the dominant trait took over the adapted to protect the animal.
In many cases, a new defense can hinder an animals behavior or a relationship between a predator and its prey can change which then presents another problem for the weaker of the animals.

Kinda odd that nothing is said about the actual head of the Hammerhead, and how that developed, only the coloration that comes standard on most sharks.
Wonder when or if the human species will change its appearence too
