Atheism is generating quite a lot of attention these days. Prominent atheists are getting the word out about their views in increasing numbers and generating lots of public debate on the proper place of religion in governments and societies in the modern world.
Here's a look at 50 of the most prominent atheists of all time who also happen to be recognized as some of the most brilliant members of our species.

Other than a smattering of Asians, the overwhelming upper middle class whiteness, and maleness-with a couple of token females thrown in, is palpable. Strikes me as very dillettante.
I personally find the four upper middle class horsemen of the athiest movement-Dawkins, Dennett, Harris and so on, to be anything but brilliant. And tremendously annoying.
I find it funny that you say four horsemen, but only list three. Hitchens could be your fourth.
And I'm sure that the Pagans found the up rise of Christians to be annoying a few centuries back.
Or the Jews-- Islam. Or any other incredibly violent religion. Buddhism, Hinduism, Tradition Chinese belief for that matter.
The only reason this annoys you is because it is new, and you're short-sighted. The fact that this system of belief is rising with no blood shed, threats of violence or damnation and bases itself off of logic is downright astounding. The fact that you do not realize this shows more about you than anything/one else.
Most of these people are very prominent in the science field, which leads me to think that they were able to make brilliant deductions based on logic and their own experiences, and were not confined by others' beliefs and influences.
I'm not sure a list like this is really meant as a comment on religion, but can definitely be interpreted as such. I'm sure there are plenty of brilliant religious people out there, but it's impossible to say without a list like this to compare with.
