I realize that the demand for lumber in all parts of the world encourages innovation and faster means to supply the demand. What an incredible machine. However, watching this video brings the devout hope that those who are responsible for managing our nation's lumber supply are not outstripping nature's ability to replenish that resource. Already, the quality of wood in the United States has deteriorated by almost 30% in the last forty years, mostly due to lumber companies harvesting immature forests.

This is a company in Finland. They are harvesting a tree farm. The trees grow rapidly, convert CO2 to cellulose, and if those are pine trees and the wood is used to make furniture and is covered with shellac the carbon is sequestered, and atmospheric CO2 is reduced, diminishing global warming.

Here's another viewpoint:

Damn! Dude's getting after it!

omg, i feel like im watching an animal being slaughtered! you can almost hear the tree screaming! im not against cutting down trees for use (on tree farms), but that machine is the thing of nightmares!

I watched one of these things go to work while on a wildfire back in '06. Why it was still cutting while the surrounding woods were burning to the ground, I have no idea.

For an alternative view on wood products as carbon storage see this slide show clarifying many misconceptions about forests, logging, and carbon:
