9 Extraordinary Human Abilities
Some people are blessed (or cursed, depending on your point of view) with the ability to recall a scene as if they were looking at a photograph. Other people can recreate music from memory. What other extraordinary abilities might humans have?
Here's a list of the most well understood and interesting abilities rated from most common to most interesting and rare. Bear in mind that most of these unusual abilities are genetic and cannot be controlled by the person affected but are an inherent quality of their physical self.

Buzzball

The Buzzball delivers a thrill like no other interactive ride can. At the heart of the Buzzball is a dual motor configuration, enabling the pilot to control the motion and direction of travel via left and right control triggers, which provides power to the driving wheels.
Once the Buzzball is in motion the pod maintains an upright position until the pilot turns, causing the pod to rotate inside the ball against the direction of travel, which applies a braking force and the pod to lock with the ball. This causes the pod to rotate with the ball until the weight of the pilot and pod overcomes the inertia forces and causes the Buzzball to change direction.

Image Fulgurator

The Image Fulgurator is a device for physically manipulating photographs. It intervenes when a photo is being taken, without the photographer being able to detect anything. The manipulation is only visible on the photo afterwards.
The Fulgurator can be used anywhere where there is another camera nearby that is being used with a flash. It operates via a kind of reactive flash projection that enables an image to be projected on an object exactly at the moment when someone else is photographing it.
Every photo another photographer takes of an object at which the Image Fulgurator is also aimed is affected by the manipulation.
See the Image Fulgurator in action at Checkpoint Charlie.

To a certain extent, hands represent a microcosm of the organs of action. They need a slightly different emphasis, perhaps from the other limbs. In particular, they are easier to apply excess force to, and potentially expose more connective tissue to stretching forces.

A Lefty Will Win The White House
The nominations of senators McCain and Obama will renew one surprising trend: for the fifth time in the last 35 years, America will have a lefty in the White House. Since 1974, presidents Ford, Reagan, George H.W. Bush, and Clinton have all favored their left hands, while President Carter and the current President Bush are righties.
Studies have shown that whereas righties favor the left hemisphere of their brain, which controls language, left-handers are more likely to have bilateral brain function, which could allow them to visualize problems more broadly and with more complexity.

The Moaster is the highest popping toaster in the world. Freddie Yauner from London, England, the man behind 'The Moaster,' used power generated by a high-pressure CO2 gas system and mechanical ram.
Yauner managed to get his toast to pop up about seven feet into the air - but that figure was restricted by the height of his ceiling, so he will try and re-set the record with an attempt conducted outdoors.

Downloading Windows Moviemaker
Someone decided to download Microsoft's Windows Moviemaker. This is what he said:
So I went back to Microsoft.com and looked at the instructions. I have to click on a folder called Windows XP. Why should I do that? Windows Update knows I am on Windows XP...
...What an absolute mess....
...So after more than an hour of craziness and making my programs list garbage and being scared and seeing that Microsoft.com is a terrible website I haven't run Moviemaker and I haven't got the plus package...
Who is this someone? Well, It's Microsoft's Bill Gates himself. It's from a leaked memo from Microsoft, it's several pages of Gates just laying into his design and programming staff for - among other issues - his personal experience when trying to install Windows Moviemaker. And it's a very fulfilling read if you've ever been frustrated by a Microsoft product.

Creative Calendar Designs

How many creative solutions for calendar design are out there? If you take a look around you'll find out that most calendars are designed in a 'standard' linear fashion. Calendar cards usually have the same structure: the month is designed in bold while the days are placed below within a rigid grid structure.
It doesn't have to be like this. In fact, there are a number of creative approaches one can consider when designing calendars.

The enormous steel ball you see in the photos and the video in this article is the world's largest 'tuned mass damper' and sits near the top of the world's largest completed skyscraper on earth, Taipei 101 in Taiwan.
The idea behind a tuned mass damper is quite simple: as a building sways (resulting from high winds, earthquakes etc.), its tuned mass damper, essentially a finely tuned and ridiculously heavy pendulum, will move in opposition to the structure's oscillations and minimise any movement.

Hell On Earth
There are places on our planet which literally resemble hell on earth. Places that you'd think were conceived by the minds of apocalyptic science fiction writers. But they are however quite real. Places, closed off to the tourists, places where no photographers are allowed to go, and those that do, get their cameras taken away and arrested by the police.
One such place is Chittagong in Bangladesh. Several beaches around Chittagong bear strange ships, parked in the sand.
Here are the ship breaking installations, where immense ocean freighters and tankers are torn apart by hundreds of gritty, lean, strong, bronze-skinned, men - by manual labor.

8 Classic Movie Robots That Actually Suck At Their Job
Basically, robots can make everything cooler, from wars to weddings. Hollywood knows this and tries, when possible, to give us what we crave in the form of kickass robots with kickass abilities.
Most of the time, though, these robots that look so cool on screen are so incompetent at their jobs, they'd have had better luck just sending a random intern to do it.

Science Made Stupid
Since the dawn of time, man has looked to the heavens and wondered: where did the stars come from? He has looked at the great diversity of plants and animals around him and wondered: where did life come from? He has looked at himself and wondered: where did I come from?
Later, he began to ask more complicated questions. He looked in his wallet and asked: where did my paycheck go? Am I on the right bus? Who do you like in the series? To the former questions, at least, science has provided answers.

Extreme Ironing

Extreme Ironing is an extreme sport and a performance art in which people take an ironing board to a remote location and iron a few items of clothing. Extreme ironing combines the thrills of an extreme outdoor activity with the satisfaction of a well pressed shirt.
Some locations where such performances have taken place include a mountainside of a difficult climb; a forest; in a canoe; while skiing or snowboarding; on top of large bronze statues; in the middle of a street; underwater; whilst parachuting, under the ice cover of a lake; and in warzones.

The World's Smelliest Postage Stamps
There have been many attempts to improve the revenue-generating power of the postage stamp. In the last 35 years, there has been a growing number of scented stamps being issued. From the first smelly stamp through to the most current olfactory offering, the use of scented stamps are a novelty that are becoming more and more prevalent.
A rose-scented stamp? Yes. I can also live with a stamp smelling like jasmine or sandalwood. But how about a sweet-and-sour-pork-scented stamp? Here is a list of some of the more notorious scented postage stamps available for collectors. Every stamp is valid postage in the country it was issued.

Valentina Tereshkova
On this day, 45 years ago, on June 16, 1963, Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova was launched into space aboard the Vostok 6, becoming the first woman to visit outer space. She spent three days aloft before returning safely to earth.
The flight made Valentina Tereshkova a national hero and she was awarded the high honor of the Order of Lenin. Her flight was considered a scientific coup for the Soviet Union, which also had the first man (Yuri Gagarin) and the first dog (Laika) in space. Before her flight Tereshkova had been an avid amateur skydiver, which led to her selection for the cosmonaut corps.

Beauty Is In The Eye Of The Goat Herder

A festival dedicated to finding the most beautiful Damascene goat drew goat breeders and livestock merchants to the Saudi capital Riyadh. The Mazayen al-Maaz - or 'Beautiful Traits of Goats' - festival saw the display of dozens of Damascene goats. Damascene goats with their distinctive protruding nose, have historically played a crucial role in traditional Arab nomadic lifestyle and economy.

Artificial Structures On Mars
When it comes to evidence for artifacts on Mars, people divide into two categories: those who find scientific analysis more convincing than imagery; and those who find the reverse to be true. This website, 'Artificial Structures On Mars,' presents evidence that may appeal to both categories.
They provide statistical proof that at least one Martian surface feature, the 'Face' on Mars, is artificial. They also show images of possible artifacts on Mars of the character that, if seen on Earth, they would immediately be categorized as the products of large-scale biological, and in many cases human, activity.
Their main conclusion is that to determine the truth, high-resolution pictures to verify or refute artificiality are urgently needed during the short remaining lifetime of the MGS spacecraft.

Cracking The Maya Code

The people of the Maya civilization used a hieroglyphic writing system. Signs - some representational, some quite abstract - are either logographic, representing words, or syllabic, representing consonant-vowel sequences. Typically, up to five signs are fitted into tight squares, which are further arranged into rows or grids.
Now you can read Maya hieroglyphs carved on an eighth-century stone monument, and hear them spoken aloud.

A happy cow is a productive cow. A productive cow gives more milk. More milk means more money. That's farmer Kirk Christie's philosophy. And how does he make his cows happy?
By giving them a new barn, waterbeds, and a flat-screen television. The idea is to boost milk production by making the cows more comfortable. Dairy scientists at Iowa State University estimate cows with comfortable bedding produce 6 percent more milk daily.

10 Shocking Facts About Global Slavery in 2008
According to research carried out by the organization Free the Slaves, more people are enslaved worldwide than ever before. In its 400 years, the transatlantic slave trade is estimated to have shipped up to 12 million Africans to various colonies in the West. Free the Slaves estimates that the number of people in slavery today is at least 27 million.
The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center suggests that three out of four slavery victims are women and that half of all modern-day slaves are children. Countless other people are in other forms of servitude which are not legally classified as slavery, according to the Anti-Slavery Society, described ambiguously by some as unfree labour.

Was Your 13th Birthday Present This Monumental?
On this day (June 12) in 1942, a young girl in Amsterdam turned 13 years old. For her first birthday as a teenager, she asked for and received a small book which was meant to hold autographs. The girl had noticed the red and white plaid book in a nearby shop window a few days earlier. She intended to use the book as a diary.
The girl's name was Anne Frank. Based on an early entry in the diary, the prospect of writing her thoughts down on paper was somewhat strange and novel to young Anne. Who could possible care what a 13-year-old had to say, she ponders: For someone like me, it is a very strange habit to write in a diary. Not only that I have never written before, but it strikes me that later I, nor anyone else, will care for the outpouring of a thirteen year old schoolgirl.
Nothing could be farther from the truth. The words written in the girl's simple handwriting would open the eyes of millions of people to the sad realities of racial hatred.

There's a lot of credibility to these accusations, as the two 'men' are rarely seen in the same place, said one Washington insider.

Objectum-Sexuality
Objectum-Sexuality, or objectophilia, is an orientation to love objects. OS people feel a strong attraction towards objects possessing, in particular, certain geometry/function. Often this attraction is regarded as an obsession to a degree that provokes criticism.
Here are 3 examples of Objectum-Sexuality.
Eija-Riitta Berliner-Mauer.
Eija-Riitta Berliner-Mauer, 54, whose surname means Berlin Wall in German, wed the concrete structure in 1979 after being diagnosed with a condition called Objectum-Sexuality. Mrs Berliner-Mauer claimed she fell in love with the structure when she first saw it on television when she was seven.
She began collecting 'his' pictures and saving up for visits. On her sixth trip in 1979 they tied the knot before a handful of guests. She insists she has a full, loving relationship with the wall.
Mrs Berliner-Mauer, who lives in Liden, northern Sweden, said: I find long, slim things with horizontal lines very sexy. The Great Wall of China is attractive, but he's too thick – my husband is sexier.
Erika La Tour Eiffel
Erika La Tour Eiffel, 36, is an ex-US Army soldier living in San Francisco. She is also a former world champion in archery – propelled to success, she believes, by her love for Lance, a bow.
She now claims to be married to the Eiffel Tower, following a ceremony with friends last year in Paris, at which she promised eternal love to the iron monument and changed her name legally to reflect the bond. Erika La Tour Eiffel says: There is a huge problem with being in love with a public object, she says sadly. The issue of intimacy – or rather lack of it – is forever present.
Sandy K.
Ever since she was eight years old, Sandy K., 25, from Berlin, Germany, was hopelessly in love with New York's Twin Towers.
For Sandy, the attraction to things is so overpowering, she confesses: When it comes to love, I am only attracted to objects. I couldn't imagine a love affair with a human being.

To play the theremin, the player moves his hands around the two metal antennas, which control the instrument's frequency and amplitude.

Deadly Glasses

London designer Kacper Hamilton has created a set of cups inspired by the Seven Deadly Sins. Each glass encapsulates a sin, which is revealed through the ritual of drinking.
The 7 Deadly Glasses are about celebrating passion and encouraging the user to be sinful in a theatrical fashion.

The Windsor Housewife Who Got A Royal Guard On The Way Home From Her Shopping Trip

It's not everyday you're the subject of a Royal Guard of honour as one unsuspecting woman found on her way home from shopping in Windsor. Carrying her bags through Windsor Great Park, the woman was greeted by a Royal Guard on the Long Walk.

8 Of The World's Most Unusual Postage Stamps

Most people would state that postage stamps are probably the most mundane item that could be collected. To many people, stamps are nothing but tiny rectangles of paper with pictures of flags or dead presidents on them.
In last Friday's post at 'Stamps of Distinction', Tony, who maintains the site, attempts to abolish the mundane classification by showcasing what he thinks are 8 of the most unusual stamps that exist. Every single one of them is valid as postage in their country of issue.

World Ocean Day

Today is World Ocean Day. World Ocean Day is an opportunity every year to honor the oceans and products they provide, such as seafood, as well as marinelife itself for aquariums and pets. The oceans also provide sea-lanes for international trade. Global pollution and over-consumption of fish have resulted in drastically dwindling population of the majority of species.
The concept of a World Ocean Day was first proposed in 1992 by the Government of Canada at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Although not yet officially designated by the United Nations, an increasing number of countries mark June 8th as an opportunity each year to celebrate our world ocean and our personal connection to the sea.

Big Fat Lie
Exercise won't make us thin, carbohydrates are what cause obesity, and eating fat doesn't cause heart disease. As you pound the treadmill in the gym, consider this: what if someone told you it was all in vain? What if no amount of exercise will make you thinner, and everything we've been led to believe about exercise, diet and obesity is wrong?
This intriguing possibility has been raised by Gary Taubes, America's most controversial science writer and the author of a book called 'The Diet Delusion: Challenging the Conventional Wisdom on Diet, Weight Loss and Disease.'

Condiment Gun

Sausages, chips and burgers will be unable to dodge the splodge once you arm yourself with a Condiment Gun. This brilliantly ridiculous sauce dispenser looks just like a comedy cartoon six-shooter and it's ideal for anyone who loves squirtable condiments such as ketchup, mustard and brown sauce.
All you do is load up the Condiment Gun's cartridge with your favourite sauce, bung it in and squeeze the trigger. Just think, armed with a Condiment Gun you can re-enact your favourite pistol-based movie moments and add a dash of flavour to your food at the same time.

A couple of weeks ago I posted about CreativeSpace, an image search where you can scroll through images visually with a scrollbar.
Now, from the same creator, Austrian developer Franz Enzenhofer, comes FaceSaerch (yes, that's the way it's written). It has the same features but this time it only looks for faces.

Well, I finally created a Twitter account. For the few of you who don't know what Twitter is, it's an online service, free for everyone, to communicate and stay connected through the exchange of quick, frequent answers to one simple question: What are you doing?
I still don't know what Twitter can do for me so at the moment I'm just experimenting with the service. I probably don't have the time to keep everyone updated on everything I do, but I'm looking into the possibilities of using Twitter to promote this blog.
My Twitter account.

Free Political Documentaries
In order to have a true democracy, there has to be a free flow of easily accessible information. Unfortunately, many important perspectives, opinions, and facts never make it to our televisions or cinemas.
Freedocumentaries.org is a site where anyone with an internet connection can watch a movie to educate themselves or simply explore another perspective whenever they please. These movies aren't just for education but are also for entertainment.

Human Car Wash

People need bathing. Hospital patients need bathing too and to speed up this process, may we suggest the Human Car Wash? The Human Car Wash eliminates slipping and falling because the washees are strapped into a hanging harness and merely need to stand or dangle in a fixed position while the conveyor belt moves them from station to station.
First the wetting station, then the soapy spray station, next the rinsing station and at the end, no towels are needed because there's a blow drying station!

Bicycle City

There is a niche of people in the world who want to live somewhere better. Somewhere that isn't an asphalt jungle. Somewhere their kids are safe and won't get hit by a car. Somewhere with clean air, beauty and a good job.
They want a new design for a city - a place that is designed and built now for this century. Bicycle City is a planned, compact design community. Its eco-friendly, car-free design is healthy, sustainable and animal-friendly.
Bicycle City is designed to have the best of large cities and small towns. Bicycle City is walking-, running- and cycling-friendly with most everything needed located nearby. If someone owns a car, they park it conveniently on the outside perimeter of the city. Children and animals are safer without motor vehicles. Without the need to drive to work, people use less energy, save money and have less stress.
(thanks Ashley)

The UroClub

You arrive at the golf course, and soon you're on to 18 holes with your best buddies. After drinking sport ades, water, beer, and whatever, you're on the 3rd hole with no rest room in sight. There are no trees or bushes around and you just gotta go, what are you going to do?
The UroClub is intended to eliminate anxiety and any feeling of uneasiness on the course. It can be emptied at the nearest restroom or later on, when the golfer returns home.

How The Web Was Won
Vanity Fair has an article about the history of the internet.
Fifty years ago, in response to the surprise Soviet launch of Sputnik, the U.S. military set up the Advanced Research Projects Agency. It would become the cradle of connectivity, spawning the era of Google and YouTube, of Amazon and Facebook, of the Drudge Report and the Obama campaign.
Each breakthrough - network protocols, hypertext, the World Wide Web, the browser - inspired another as narrow-tied engineers, long-haired hackers, and other visionaries built the foundations for a world-changing technology.
Keenan Mayo and Peter Newcomb let the people who made it happen tell the story.

The 100 Greatest Movie Posters

A great movie poster is a hard thing to find. Most posters are cut and paste jobs that don't sell the movie very well at all. A great poster should intrigue, shock, inspire and excite. It should be aesthetically beautiful or original. Above all, it should be so memorable that a single glance will be instantly recognizable.
