Performance Art With A Difference

Dangling horizontally out of a skyscraper, this hovering figure looks set to fall to his doom. But Chinese artist Li Wei hasn't just lost it all on a game of chance - this is performance art with a difference. Li Wei has produced an unsettling series of self-portraits involving his face reflected in mirrors in public places, and photographs of himself crashing into walls and sidewalks.
His work is a mixture of performance art and photography that creates illusions of a sometimes dangerous reality. Li Wei states that these images are not computer montages and works with the help of props such as mirror, metal wires, scaffolding and acrobatics.

The History Of The Cathars

High on a sacred mountain in Southern France, the whitened ruins of Montségur are a reminder of the last actively visible gnostic school in the West, the Cathari. Below Montségur lies a peaceful meadow, its name, 'Field of the Burned', the only indication of a grim event that took place there a little over 700 years ago. In March, 1244, 205 Cathars were burned alive on the site, rather than renounce their creed.
The name Cathari, means 'pure' in Greek. Cathars in general formed an anti-sacerdotal party in opposition to the Catholic Church, protesting what they perceived to be the moral, spiritual, and political corruption of the Church. They claimed an Apostolic succession from the founders of Christianity, and saw Rome as having betrayed and corrupted the original purity of the message.
The History of the Cathars.

The Mended Spiderweb Series

The Mended Spiderweb Series came about during a six-week period in June and July in 1998 which Californian artist Nina Katchadourian spent on Pörtö. In the forest and around the house where she was living, she searched for broken spiderwebs which she repaired using red sewing thread.
All of the patches were made by inserting segments one at a time directly into the web. Sometimes the thread was starched, which made it stiffer and easier to work with. The short threads were held in place by the stickiness of the spider web itself; longer threads were reinforced by dipping the tips into white glue.

16 Abandoned And Decaying Hotels From Around The World

Around the world stand empty hotels that symbolise the loss of prosperity and the death of dreams. Lavish resorts and small hotels which were once filled with life and activity are now abandoned and filled only with decay.
Abandoned hotels range from decrepit to like-new and exist everywhere from remote parts of the globe to modern urban cities. These abandoned hotels serve as reminders that even the best laid plans don't always work out over time.

Living Lights
Mosquito Bay in Puerto Rico is one of the most bioluminescent bodies of water in the world.
Any movement in the water sends a billow of bright blue-green light spinning and undulating in fractal beauty, until it eventually diffuses back into the dark stillness of the bay. Below you, bright blue tracer lines suddenly appear in the water as small fish dart through the blackness.
Bioluminescence is a form of natural light created by living organisms converting internal chemical energy into light. The light in Mosquito Bay is created by a tiny organism called Dinoflagellate.
Mosquito Bay contains an astonishing number, roughly 700,000 of these glowing fellas per single gallon of water. Although they are microscopic, the light they give off is a hundred times larger themselves, and in great numbers they light up like an underwater aurora borealis.

Workers' Memorial Day

Today is Workers' Memorial Day, an international day of remembrance and action for workers killed, disabled, injured or made unwell by their work. According to the International Labour Organisation, across the world each year, more than two million women and men die as a result of work-related accidents and diseases.
Workers suffer approximately 270 million occupational accidents each year, and fall victim to some 160 million incidents of work-related illnesses. Hazardous substances kill 440,000 workers annually – asbestos claims 100,000 lives. One worker dies every 15 seconds worldwide. 6,000 workers die every day. Work kills more people than wars.
Workers' Memorial Day is an opportunity to highlight the preventable nature of most workplace accidents and ill health and to promote campaigns and union organisation in the fight for improvements in workplace safety. The slogan for the day is Remember the Dead - Fight for the Living.

Coffin Couches

Our niche happens to be 18 gauge steel coffins which we collected from local funeral homes primarily in Southern California. It is a health and safety law that funeral homes cannot resell used coffins to the general public. We approached funeral directors with the attitude of recycling.
These coffins are not used for burial due to slight cosmetic inconsistencies. They are reconfigured and modified resulting in a finished product - a unique one a kind coffin couch.

Activate
Activate is a totally new functional beverage featuring an interactive experience people have never had before. The drink's vitamins and herbs are stored as powder in a chamber inside the cap. When you twist the cap clockwise, a small plastic blade cuts the seal in the chamber.
Simultaneously, a small armature opens the chamber allowing the ingredients to drop into the water below. Vitamins and other healthful ingredients deteriorate sitting in water. Storing the ingredients separate inside the cap keeps them fresh until the moment they're released, for maximum potency.
Here's a demonstration video.

The World's Most Dangerous Bird

Cassowaries are very large flightless birds native to the tropical forests of New Guinea and northeastern Australia. Normally cassowaries are very shy but when disturbed can lash out dangerously with their powerful legs.
They are capable of inflicting fatal injuries to an adult human. Wounded or cornered birds are particularly dangerous. Cassowaries, deftly using their surroundings to conceal their movements, have been known to out-flank organized groups of human predators.
Cassowaries are considered to be one of the most dangerous animals to keep in zoos, based on the frequency and severity of injuries incurred by zookeepers.

The Amen Break And The Golden Ratio

The 'Amen break' was a drum solo performed by Gregory Sylvester Coleman. The drum solo is frequently used as a sampled drum loop in hip hop, jungle and drum and bass music. It is 5.20 seconds long and consists of 4 bars of the drum-solo sampled from the song 'Amen, Brother' as performed by the 1960s funk and soul outfit The Winstons.
Mathematician Michael Schneider became intrigued when he saw an image of the audio waves because he immediately recognized the Golden Ratio in the structure of its timing. And he was surprised to find an even deeper relationship to the structure of the human body.

Space Is Full Of Crap
The European Space Agency has released images showing all the satellites and human-made debris now orbiting space as a result of 51 years of launching stuff since Sputnik. That's about 6,000 satellites up there - of which only 800 remain operational - plus thousands of other objects from launches and accidents.
According to the ESA, this is really bad news and urgent measures are needed. While the idea of bringing back used stages and satellites back to Earth may seem too expensive, in the long run it's clear that leaving all this trash up there is going to have huge consequences to the development of space exploration and colonization.

If Star Wars Was Real
What if Star Wars was real? So much information exists on planets, species, technology and the force, that it might as well be!
Individuals came forward with personal items such as photographs, artifacts, even old currency that gave evidence that not only was Star Wars influenced by history, some of it may actually be real! This website endeavors to catalog and display any proof that Star Wars is real.
The photograph above is an amazing discovery into the secret life of Elvis Presley. Being almost impossible to live a 'normal life' Elvis, apparently, employed security forces of a Gamorrean nature for his safety. This image shows two Gamorrean guards, one in the foreground with a vibro-lance and one in the background with a battle axe.

Oldest Living Tree Found In Sweden

The world's oldest known living tree, a conifer that first took root at the end of the last Ice Age, has been discovered in Sweden. The visible portion of the 13-foot-tall 'Christmas tree' isn't ancient, but its root system has been growing for 9,550 years.
Discovered in 2004, the lone Norway spruce - of the species traditionally used to decorate homes during Christmas - represents the planet's longest-lived identified plant.

Barber Shop Signs From Africa

A collection of painted signboards from barber shops and hair-dressers in Ghana, Mali, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cote d'Ivoire, and Togo.
Brightly painted in commercial housepaints on plywood or masonite, these barber shop signs are a colorful, humorous, and sometimes outrageous contemporary African folk art. They reflect both the ancient African tradition of hairbraiding and hair-cutting and the cultural clash of imported influences.

Cloud Streets
Cloud streets are rows of cumulus clouds aligned parallel to the low-level wind. They are usually more or less straight, but rarely cloud streets assume paisley patterns when the wind driving the clouds encounters an obstacle.
Those cloud formations are known as von Kármán vortex streets. Although conventional cloud streets are clearly visible from the ground, large scale patterns such as these are seen best on satellite photographs.

Since then, there have been 4 kings of Redonda. The current king is Robert the Bald (pictured here). The population of Redonda is zero. Even the King prefers to live elswhere. There can only seagulls and goats to be found.

Ever heard of Murphy's Law, Sod's Law, or Finagle's Law of Dynamic Negatives? They're actually the same and they are telling us that anything that can go wrong, will go wrong.
This explains why your email will most likely crash as you try to send something important, how the chances of you spilling a drink down your clothes are highest just before a date, and why it's a safe bet that your heating will most often break down during a cold snap.
British Gas commissioned scientists to come up with a formula to predict Sod's Law. They did just that and also found out that things don't just go wrong, they do so at the most annoying moment.

Ohio Crybaby Bridge Tour

There are many bridges in the United States known as Crybaby Bridge. Most are named this because the sound of a baby can be, or has been, heard from the bridge. Most are accompanied by a legend of a baby or young child/children being killed nearby, or thrown from the bridge into the river or creek below.
With some variations, most crybaby bridge legends have this in common: park your car over or under the bridge, and you will soon hear the sounds of a person crying.

The Smallest Girl In The World

At just 1ft 11 inches tall, she is the smallest girl in the world. But 15-year old Jyoti Amge from Nagpur, India, is far from being unhappy about her tiny size. She says that she enjoys the celebrity status her height has brought her.
Jyoti Amge attends her local high school where she studies alongside classmates of her own age, though she sits at a specially made miniature desk.

The Jump Bike
The Jump Bike was invented by Italian designer Domenico La Bombarda. You can rest your body weight on the frame and bounce along with a running motion from the legs. Could be useful for people who are limited in their mobility but it does look a bit silly.

Weatherman Gone Wild
AccuWeather's Jim Kosek just might be the most entertaining meteorologist in America. He's certainly the most manic. And his gyrations in front of a green screen can turn weather into theater.

Gaffe A Minute
A gaffe is a clumsy social error, a faux pas, a blatant mistake or misjudgment. Gaffe a Minute relishes the wit in witlessness - in our daily glitches, malapropisms, and pratfalls. Here you can revel in the blunders of others, confess your own flubs, or measure your gaffe quotient.Gaffe a Minute celebrates stories that give new meaning to the term 'idiot proof.' The website's founders fall into two categories: error-prone and (mostly) error-proof. One sleeps, the other doesn't. One is directionally impaired, the other homes in correctly. One has much more fun on a daily basis. One laughs at herself; the other also laughs at her.
We now live in a state known for its political gaffes. But the gaffes we revel in most are our own - and those of our friends. We hope you'll 'fess up and tell stories on yourself, too.

How To Build A Herbie
Herbie is a Volkswagen Beetle, which 'stars' in several Disney motion pictures from 1969 onwards. The car has a mind of his own and is capable of driving himself. He is distinguished by red, white and blue racing stripes from front to back bumper and a racing-style number '53' on his front hood, doors, and engine lid.
Now you can make your own Herbie.

Co-writing by Silas Jackson.
The Presurfer will feature a Home Schooled cartoon every Monday. This is an absolute exclusive cooperation between The Presurfer and Ash Jackson.

Dangerous Pathway
El Caminito del Rey (The King's pathway, often shortened to El Camino del Rey) is a walkway, now fallen into disrepair, pinned along the steep walls of a narrow gorge in El Chorro, near Alora in Spain.
The walkway has now gone many years without maintenance, and is in a highly deteriorated and dangerous state. Some parts of the walkway have completely collapsed and have been replaced by a beam and a metallic wire on the wall.
Many people have lost their lives on the walkway in recent years. After four people died in two accidents in 1999 and 2000, the local government closed the entrances. However, adventurous tourists still find their way into the walkway.

Couple Sues Google Over 'Street View'
A Pittsburgh couple is suing Google for invasion of privacy, claiming that the web giant's popular 'Street View' mapping feature has made a photo of their home available to online searchers.
Aaron and Christine Boring accuse Google of an 'intentional and/or grossly reckless invasion' of their seclusion and privacy since they live on a street that is clearly marked with a 'Private Road' sign.
When I checked out the address I noticed Google has removed the images from Google Maps.

Sun Tzu's 'The Art Of War' Online
Sun Tzu, born around 500 B.C., was a Chinese general, military theorist, and philosopher. He is the author of the world's first and potentially most long-lived work of military theory, The Art of War, also known as The Thirteen Chapters.
Sun Tzu was the first to set out what we would now recognize as principles of war: moral influence, weather, terrain, command, and doctrine. The first meant the trust of people in their leaders. By 'command' he meant the qualities and ability of the general and by 'doctrine' he meant organization, command and control, and logistics.
The Art of War is now online as a PDF document.

Signature Issue: Becoming President of the United States. Reproductive Process: Squirts thousands of egg sacs into host intestine, then fertilizes them herself.
