The Pulitzer Prizes

The Pulitzer Prize is an American Award for Journalism, Literature and Music. Pulitzer Prize winners are chosen by an independent board. Hungarian-born newspaper publisher Joseph Pulitzer established the prize and left money to Columbia University upon his death in 1911. Columbia began its journalism school with its share of the money and Columbia has administered the Pulitzer Prize since its inception.

A Pulitzer Prize Winner may be an individual, a group of individuals, or a newspaper's staff. There are 21 Pulitzer categories. In 20 of those categories the winners receive a $10,000 cash award and a certificate.
