Last Of The Quaggas

On this date in 1883, the last known quagga mare in the world died in the Amsterdam Zoo, where she had lived since 1867. Scientists have been trying to bring it back ever since.
The quagga looked a lot like a zebra but with stripes only on its front half.

The Quagga Project, started in 1987, is an attempt by a group of dedicated people in South Africa to bring back an animal from extinction and reintroduce it into reserves in its former habitat.
