It's no secret that clowns make people uncomfortable. Believe it or not, that's the point: Clowns were created to test social conventions and speak truth to power, wagging their gloved fingers at institutional tomfoolery. Clown hate has never been more intense.
Yet we are still lousy with clowns - Christian clowns, hospital clowns, burlesque clowns, hip-hop clowns - and they aren't going away. Collectors Weekly investigate where all these fools came from, and whether they deserve such a bad rap.
