When directors finish a movie and hate it (because the studio interfered or they're embarrassed by it), they don't want their names on it. So what do they do? Until 2000, orphaned films were credited to 'Alan Smithee.'
Alan Smithee was an
official pseudonym used by film directors who wish to disown a project. It was the sole pseudonym used by members of the Directors Guild of America. The director was also required by guild rules not to discuss the circumstances leading to the move or even to acknowledge being the actual director.
