Since the very first Earth Day was celebrated in the United States in 1970, average temperatures across the U.S. have increased markedly. A new
interactive graphic from Climate Central, a nonprofit research and journalism organization, shows a state-by-state breakdown of those temperature trends.

Thanks for bring up Earth Day. Let's recall what they were saying back in 1970:
“It is already too late to avoid mass starvation.” - Denis Hayes, chief organizer for Earth Day
“It doesn’t matter what is true, it only matters what people believe is true.” – Paul Watson, co-founder of Greenpeace.
“Phasing out the human race will solve every problem on earth, social and environmental.” - Dave Forman, founder of Earth First
“I suspect that eradicating smallpox was wrong. It played an important part in balancing ecosystems.” - John Davis, editor of the Earth First Journal
"Population will inevitably and completely outstrip whatever small increases in food supplies we make. The death rate will increase until at least 100-200 million people per year will be starving to death during the next ten years.” - Paul Ehrlich, Stanford University biologist
“Civilization will end within 15 or 30 years unless immediate action is taken against problems facing mankind.” - George Wald, Harvard Biologist
“The world has been chilling sharply for about twenty years. If present trends continue, the world will be about four degrees colder for the global mean temperature in 1990, but eleven degrees colder in the year 2000. This is about twice what it would take to put us into an ice age.” — Kenneth Watt
This whole warming thing is BS. I live in Florida where we used to be able to grow oranges but now it's too cold. Yes we grow oranges in Florida but not like we used to.
The most obvious difference is that these are all disparate people, speaking on a wide range of topics with little context. The "phasing out the human race" quote sounds like extremist bonehead Ann Coulter saying leaders of muslim countries should all be killed and their people converted to her brand of superstition. Both should be completely ignored.
In the case of climate change the opinion, based on years of actual data, of the scientific community is pretty unanimous. So there is that.

In the 1970's the case for global cooling, based on years of actual data, of the scientific community is pretty unanimous. So there is that. They were as accurate then as they are now.
