Higgs Boson May Have Been Glimpsed

The Higgs boson is a hypothetical massive elementary particle that is predicted to exist by the Standard Model of particle physics. If shown to exist, it would help explain why other particles can have mass. It is the only predicted elementary particle that has not yet been observed in particle physics experiments.

But now, the Higgs boson may have been glimpsed, say researchers at the Large Hadron Collider in Geneva. Scientists say that two experiments at the LHC see hints of the Higgs at the same mass, fuelling huge excitement. But the LHC does not yet have enough data to claim a discovery. Finding the Higgs boson would be one of the biggest scientific advances of the last 60 years. It is crucial for allowing us to make sense of the Universe.

What is the Higgs boson?
