Video shot September 5, 2011 on the north edge of Bastrop State Park near Austin. All but about 100 acres of the 6,000-acre park have been blackened by fire. Firefighters have been battling blazes for 3 days.
I live in Central Texas and it's generally pretty breezy all the time. 20-30 mph winds are not uncommon most days. When the wildfires kicked off, the wind was blowing about that hard.
Also, the extreme drought hasn't helped. My area normally gets about 30 inches of rain a year, but we've had less than two inches. The whole place is just a tinderbox.

The speed at which a fire spreads depends on many conditions. In this case, high winds are causing it to spread rapidly. This is not typical.
The Texas Hill Country isn't typical, that's why.
