An advertisement in Popular Science of February 1932.
Using the exhaust gas of the automobile to clean the upholstery is the accomplishment of a recently invented device. An aluminum attachment is fastened to the exhaust pipe and the engine is allowed to idle. As the exhaust gas passes through this device suction is created at the inlet hole. Collected by a nozzle, the dust and dirt are drawn through the hose and expelled into the air at the rear of the car. It is made in three models, for cars of different size.(via Modern Mechanix)

The idea is not exactly as preposterous as it looks at first glance -- the setup creates vacuum at the business end of the hose, it doesn't spray out exhaust fumes.
However, it doesn't really create vacuum, but rather a slightly lower pressure than regular, so the suction isn't all that great. Considering how much fuel is wasted for these results, the idea is preposterous -- just not as absurd as it seems at the first glance, that's all.
