In Almost Every Picture

Tilburg in the Netherlands is my home town. The city is famous for its annual fair which is one of the largest in Europe. 'In Almost Every Picture' tells the story of a Dutch woman whose life is seen from the point of view of a fairground shooting gallery.

The chronological series begins in 1936, when a 16-year-old girl from Tilburg in Holland picks up a gun and shoots at the target in a shooting gallery. Every time she hits the target, it triggers the shutter of a camera and a portrait of the girl in firing pose is taken and given as a prize.

And so a lifelong love affair with the shooting gallery begins. This series documents almost every year of the woman's life (there is a conspicuous pause from 1939 to 1945) up until present times. At the age of 88 Ria van Dijk still makes her pilgrimage to the Shooting Gallery.

This is a nice post Gerard. I am also from Tilburg and I know Ria all my life.
Last summer we celebrated her 90 th birthday and I had the honour to drive her home after the party.

What I found amazing--from a woman's perspective--is how little she changed over so many years. It wasn't until her latter years that you could tell she was growing older. Very cool to have such a photographic history, of a woman and the times she lived in.

@Cees: Wat leuk om eens een reactie van een mede-stadgenoot en collega weblogger te krijgen.

Misschien kunnen we eens een keertje samen een kopje koffie gaan drinken en wat babbelen over bloggen. Laat het me maar weten.
