Taste is detected by minute, barrel-shaped taste buds - about 9,000 of them - located on the upper surface of the tongue. There also a few taste buds in the throat and on the soft palate at the back of the mouth. The tip of each taste bud carries a group of 15 to 20 taste receptors -cells linked to nerve fibers that carry taste impulses to the brain.
