It is a porcupine. You can see the quills raised on it's shoulders.It is facing away.

Yeah, I'm betting on "bear", too.Love the "I'm gonna go climb the tree" idea. "I don't know what that wild animal is, and it's only 100 feet up or so..."
They didn't think to throw a stick at it or something?

porcupine - if they could see its back, they would see all the spines. you can see them on the top of its head though.
If that's a porcupine then they've evolved a lot since I last saw one.

Definitely a porcupine. No question. As for the 'face', humans are incredibly talented at seeing faces in random patterns.
