The Government-Surplus Machines That Power A Cutting-Edge Science Museum

The Exploratorium science museum in San Francisco has a lot of old World War II-era machines in the shop. Collectors Weekly had the good fortune to speak with Tom Tompkins, who has been an exhibit builder at the Exploratorium since 1974.

Mr Tompkins actually acquired many of the shop's machines for only the cost of shipping from long-shuttered military sites like the Naval Air Rework Facility on Alameda and the Naval Radiological Defense Laboratory at Hunters Point.
