In 1993, Dr. James A Heathcote, a general practitioner in Bromley, set out to answer the question: 'As you get older do your ears get bigger?' Dr. Heathcote and three colleagues examined the ears of 206 men of various ages, then presented his findings in a monograph called 'Why Do Old Men Have Big Ears?'
A chance observation - that older people have bigger ears - was at first controversial but has been shown to be true. Dr. Heathcote wrote: 'As we get older our ears get bigger (on average by 0.22 mm a year).'

The Dwindling Facial Tattoo Tradition Of Myanmar's Lai Tu Chin Tribe
Myanmar's Lai Tu Chin Tribe has a tradition of facial tattooing for women. When the military gained control of Myanmar, also known as Burma, in the 1960s, they banned this tradition.
The exact origin and meaning of the tradition is unknown, but the tattoos are considered coming-of-age symbols and marks of beauty. While the practice continued to a much lesser extent after it was outlawed, young Chin women today no longer receive the tattoos. The women who carry them now are likely the last of their kind.

Is Full-Time Work Bad For Our Brains?

You could be disappointed. If you're over 40, working more than 25 hours of work a week could be impairing your intelligence, according to a study released in February by researchers for the Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research in Australia.
Working 25 hours a week (part time or three days a week) was the optimum amount of time spent working a week for cognitive functioning, while working less than that was detrimental to the agility of the brain for both men and women, the study found.

How Disease Bacteria May Someday Power Your Smartphone
Bacteria constitute a large domain of micrometer-long organisms that exist in different shapes ranging from rods, spheres, and spirals. Their potential could be harnessed in the future to provide a means for power.
When observed under a microscope, you'll notice that bacteria produces lots of random movements. This kind of movement has too much spontaneity and in itself cannot produce energy. Scientists admit that we won't be able to power homes with bacteria anytime soon. Even then it will be possible to power micromachines effectively in a short while.

Why Does White Noise Help People Sleep?
On its face, flipping on white noise before hitting the sack must be the most counterintuitive idea out there. Want to sleep better? Simple solution: make a bunch of noise.
And yet, not only do some people swear they can't get to sleep without a fan running, there are companies that will sell you noise-makers for helping you get the best of your bed rest. What is up with our brains and our ears? The short answer: white noise is better noise. At least for some sleepers.

Unless you've been living under a rock for the last couple of years, you've likely heard the term Internet of Things, or IoT, at some point. But what does it mean?
