The Neptune Memorial Reef - An Under Sea Cemetery

When you think of dead people, concrete and underwater, you might be forgiven if your mind produces images of mafia gangsters and of their victims swimming with the fishes. All that has changed - in the future what might spring to mind is a remarkable new underwater cemetery.

Off the coast of Miami in Florida a new reef is forming. It is not the result of nature playing its course but the bi-product of people's desire to have a last resting place which is both unusual and creates a new ecosystem. This is a cemetery under the sea, the Neptune Memorial Reef.

Why Can't Some Men Grow Facial Hair?

Facial hair is a symbol of virility and wisdom (not to mention a wonderful enhancement to a male body). But that doesn't mean a man who suffers from boy face - meaning, he can't cultivate a beard - isn't wise or manly. So why can't some men grow facial hair?

See You Folks

How many times will you see your parents before they die? Yes, that sounds pretty macabre. But a new website named 'See Your Folks' predicts exactly that. The website creators say: 'We believe that increasing awareness of death can help us to make the most of our lives. The right kind of reminders can help us to focus on what matters, and perhaps make us better people.'

Just tell 'See You Folks' where your parents live, how many times you see your parents a year, and the age of your mother and father. The results are based on World Health Organization longevity research.

Did Ancient Peoples Bless Their Houses With Eggs?

Sardis, an ancient city in modern-day Turkey, has been the site of archeological expeditions since 1910 and is still churning out new finds today. But this past July archaeologists working at the site found something particularly unusual: 2,000-year-old eggs, likely meant to bless the house as part of a purification ritual.

The eggs were discovered in two pots, which date to between A.D. 54 and 68 and were found buried in the earthen floor of an early Roman house. One egg was smashed, the other whole, and both were filled with dirt. Amazingly, a team of conservators were able to excavate one eggshell intact, except for a small, already-existing hole in the side.

The Incredible Underwater Art Of Competitve Aquascaping

Aquascaping is the craft of arranging aquatic plants, as well as rocks, stones, cavework, or driftwood, in an aesthetically pleasing manner within an aquarium. The world of aquascaping is just as difficult, expensive, and cutthroat as any other sport but requires expertise in many different fields to guarantee success.

Aquarium designers possess large amounts of expertise in biology, design, photography, and excel in the art of patience, as individual aquascapes can take months if not years to fully mature into a completed landscape.

Mystery Rock 'Appears' In Front Of Mars Rover

After a decade of exploring the Martian surface, the scientists overseeing veteran rover Opportunity thought they'd seen it all. That was until a rock mysteriously 'appeared' a few feet in front of the six wheeled rover a few days ago.

In a comparison of recent photographs captured by the Rover's camera, on sol 3528 (a sol is a Martian day) of the mission, only bare bedrock can be seen. But on sol 3540, a fist-sized rock had appeared.

World War II Bunker Cut In Half To Make Artful War Memorial

A World War II bunker near the town of Culemborg in the Netherlands was cut in half and transformed into an artful war memorial. Bunker 599, originally built in 1940, was meant to hold up to 13 soldiers during bombing raids. It was one of many small cogs in the New Dutch Waterline, an expansive series of water-based defenses that dates back to 1815.

But with the help of Dutch studios RAAAF and Atelier de Lyon, the bunker has been split down the middle to create a unique and artful war memorial.

Lightning Strikes Etch The Sky Over White Sands National Monument

White dunes roll away into the distance like giant snow drifts; then lightning flashes, illuminating the silvery peaks, so that momentarily they seem to glow. However, despite appearances, snow here is unlikely.

This is the White Sands National Monument in New Mexico, and what we see are granules of gypsum piled up in waves across the landscape. White Sands is, in fact, part of the biggest gypsum dune field on the planet. It's an incredible sight at any time but is made doubly stunning during a lightning storm.
