New Record: World's Oldest Animal Is 507 Years Old

In autumn 2006 a team of researchers went on an expedition to Iceland, where they discovered something that made the headlines across the world. One of the Arctica islandica bivalve molluscs, also known as ocean quahogs, that the researchers picked up from the Icelandic seabed turned out to be around 405 years old, and thus the world's oldest animal.

However, after taking a closer look at the old mollusc using more refined methods, the researchers found that the animal is actually 100 years older than they thought. The new estimate says that the mollusc is actually 507 years old.

How Giant Birds Can Fly Nearly 10,000 Miles In One Go

Forget circumnavigating the globe in 80 days - an albatross can do it in a mere 46. These world travelers are among the largest flying birds, weighing up to 25 pounds (11 kilograms), and with a wingspan of 11 feet (3 meters).

But hefting such huge bodies off the ground takes a lot of energy. If albatrosses flew simply by flapping their wings, they would lose about half their body mass fueling that kind of flight. So how do these kings of the sky complete such long journeys so quickly?

The Strange Fate Of Eben Byers

Some people become famous for the way they lived their lives... and some become famous for the way they, well, shuffled off this mortal coil. Eben Byers was one such unfortunate soul. Eben McBurney Byers (1880-1932) was a wealthy American socialite, athlete, and industrialist. He won the 1906 U.S. Amateur in golf.

In 1927, while returning via chartered train from the annual Harvard–Yale football game, Byers fell from his berth and injured his arm. He complained of persistent pain and a doctor suggested that he take Radithor, a patent medicine manufactured by William J. A. Bailey.

The Fathomless Mysteries Of The Deepest Lake On Earth

Aliens, supernatural powers, ancient curses, dragons, even a visit from Jesus - there seems to be no end to the bizarre stories linked to this freshwater lake in southern Siberia.

Yet even without the strange tales, this would be a fascinating place - one of incredible beauty and with enough ecological value to make it a UNESCO World Heritage site. Lake Baikal is the largest and oldest lake on Earth, not to mention one of the most biologically unique.
